Police: Man seriously injured in shooting near Arlington Expressway

JSO: Man taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries after being shot

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A man was seriously injured in a shooting late Thursday afternoon in the city's Arlington neighborhood, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said.

Police said a black male, who had been shot, was found about 4:30 p.m. at a Mobil gas station on Arlington Road at Blackard Road, just off the Arlington Expressway.

The man was taken to UF Health Hospital with life-threatening injuries, JSO Sgt. John said. The victim's identity has not yet been released.

John said it was unknown exactly where the shooting happened or how many times the man had been shot. The Sheriff's Office initially said it was investigating an undetermined death.

Crime tape was used to rope off nearby Bert Road, next to Arlington Village Apartments, while detectives with the JSO Homicide Unit investigated.

"It's within the crime scene area," John said. "So we're attempting to locate video in those businesses."

No one else was injured. As of Thursday evening, police were searching the area for any witnesses.

"As you can see, (there's) a lot of foot traffic -- just trying to determine if anybody ever saw anything," John said.

Uber driver Dennis Wilson told News4Jax that there's been a lot of crime in the area lately.

"There's a gang always standing out here at the Mobil gas station all the time. There's always shootings back there on Bert Road. I mean, it's just a rough neighborhood," Wilson said.

According to the JSO crime mapping tool, 50 crimes, including 17 assaults and 10 burglaries, have been reported since Nov. 1 within a half-mile of the scene.

Homicide detectives continue to investigate. Anyone with information is asked to call the Sheriff's Office at 904-630-0500. To remain anonymous, contact Crime Stoppers at 1-866-845-TIPS.
