Man indicted in Green Cove Springs shooting death

GREEN COVE SPRINGS, Fla. – A fugitive who was arrested in Gainesville on Aug. 28 in connection to a Green Cove Springs homicide was indicted Thursday.

Victor Lamar Cruger Jr., 25, is accused of shooting Ernestine Hines, 55, just after 4 a.m. on Aug. 23. Police said the shooting happened on Washington Lane in Green Cove Springs as the two of them and two other people sat in a car. Police said the other two people in the car at the time of the shooting were relatives of Hines.

Hines was taken to a hospital, where she died.

Alachua County deputies and Gainesville police working with the U.S. Marshals Service Fugitive Task Force found Cruger on Aug. 28 at a home in Southeast Gainesville across the street from an elementary school.

After a brief SWAT standoff, Cruger was arrested without incident, deputies said.

Cruger was indicted Thursday on first-degree murder, two counts of first-degree attempted murder, armed burglary with assault and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
