New Black Panthers protest councilwoman

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The New Black Panther Party held a protest late Monday afternoon at City Hall demanding an apology from councilwoman Kimberly Daniels.

The group said Daniels (pictured right) made hateful remarks about Mikhail Muhammad, one of the group leaders, during the group's protests in the Trayvon Martin case.

"She called me claiming that she was speaking to me on the behalf of (Rep.) Corrine Brown (D-Fla.) and asking me, don't incite black people to violence when you come down at Hemming Plaza yesterday. So we had some war of words," Muhammad said at last Tuesday's City Council meeting.

The group also said Daniels accused the New Black Panthers of being "terrorist" and a "violent hate group."

"This group, and I'm talking about the New Black Panthers, is comprised of three people who would not have been heard if people were already in the park," Daniels said. "They do not represent the black community. The reality is that racism is a serious concern in our city."

Counter-protesters and Daniels supporters demonstrated across the street from the protest at City Hall on Monday afternoon.

Daniels' office said it had no comment.
