Only half of Americans are planning a summer vacation. According to a new Bankrate survey, those who are opting out say they simply can’t afford it.

Luckily, folks at First Florida Credit Union say you don’t have to go into debt to go on a trip. They recommend using travel comparison websites when planning and signing up for alerts to get the best deals.

Also, be flexible with your travel dates and where you travel.

Ashleigh Robinson from First Florida says to also make sure to use your credit card to your advantage.

“You want to make sure that you are not spending more on that card than you can afford to pay off at the end of the month. That’s so important. But also, if you’re traveling internationally, use a card that has low or no foreign transaction fees. And find extra protection with a card that offers travel insurance coverage.”

To round it out, Robinson also says to try and find some free activities on your trip to save some cash. Think museums, beaches, and picnics in the park.
