Days of constant rain bring snakes into some homes

Expert says he's found snakes in cars, apartments, houses

Days of constant rain are bringing unwanted creatures into some local homes.

Snakes are on the move, and there is a warning from a snake-trapping expert who said he's found snakes in cars, apartments and homes.

"They are getting into people's homes, businesses, any time you have a cracked door, they will get underneath garage doors," said Jeff Altman, of American Trappers.

Altman has been trapping for years and said everyone should be on the lookout, especially parents of little ones.

"Snakes will get up under here. This is a good hiding area because it's low to the ground. It's got something covering it, and there is a little bit of greenery here that they can try to get around and blend into," Altman said.

And for those with bushes outside the home?

"Definitely keep bushes cut up where you can see underneath them to the base, about a foot high is perfect for that," Altman said.

If you have potted plants, keep in mind snakes are cold-blooded and a clay pot is attractive because it's an insulator for heat.

Altman also warns about woodpiles: Keep them 20 feet from your home. He said make sure your garage is sealed tight because if you can see sunlight through the cracks, it's just enough room for snakes.
