BALDWIN, Fla. – A Baldwin Middle-High School basketball coach arrested Dec. 1 on a charge of possession of a firearm on school grounds, could be fired over the incident, News4Jax has learned.

The investigation began when a parent of a player contacted the principal, saying Julius Ferguson, 35, had shown the team a handgun during practice the day before, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

A Duval County school district police officer contacted Ferguson about the accusation, and asked to search his car.

Police said a .40-caliber handgun with a 15-round magazine and holster was found in the vehicle.

Ferguson's case has been accepted into the felony pretrial intervention program because he's a first-time offender. If he follows the guidelines, his record will be expunged.

But school investigators recommended that Ferguson be suspended without pay and terminated. The Duval County School Board will take up that recommendation at its meeting Tuesday night.
