In an attempt to restore America’s faith in the nation’s high court, President Joe Biden is calling for changes to the Supreme Court.
The two biggest changes being endorsed by the president are term limits for justices and an enforceable code of ethics.
Biden is also calling for a push for a constitutional amendment making clear that presidents are not immune from federal prosecution.
That’s a response to the Supreme Court’s July 1 ruling in the Trump case.
Constitutional law expert Rod Sullivan appeared on The Morning Show to discuss the president’s address.
He said each of the issues would require constitutional amendments and in some cases Congressional approval.
House Speaker Mike Johnson already said the issues are “dead on arrival.”
And with a divided Congress there is little chance of that happening this year.
Even if Democrats control both chambers after the election, they’re unlikely to have the 60 Senate votes needed to overcome a filibuster.
On the “code of ethics,” it becomes a question of enforceability.
Sullivan also talks about the fact that Biden has changed his posture on the court through the years and is adopting this stance now, which represents a momentous shift, probably in an effort to secure his legacy during his final days in office.
