CHARLTON COUNTY, Ga. – A state park in the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge reopened Friday morning in the same week that firefighters battling the West Mims fire received some relief thanks to three days of rain in the region.

Stephen C. Foster State Park, located 18 miles from Fargo, Georgia, has been closed since the shortly after a lightning strike ignited the huge wildfire on April 6. The fire is still active, but firefighters made significant headway Thursday on the numerous fire-suppression operations underway.

Cabins and campsites can again be reserved by visitors. Extremely low water levels mean that boating is not available and boardwalks and trails remain closed becasue of fire suppression equipment across the trails.

Visitors are urged to use extreme caution in the park.

The main entrance to the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge near Folkston remains closed to all public access. Officials said that after it reopens, visitors can expect limited access to extremely low water levels and firefighting equipment in the area.
