Do you want to keep your pets safe before fireworks start popping off in the sky on Thursday?
Veterinarians suggest planning ahead as fireworks can be a nightmare for your four-legged family members.
“Pets don’t understand what all the loud scary booms and lights are about, so it’s a time for fight or flight for a lot of pets,” said Laurie Miller with the Vanderburgh Humane Society.

Here are a few tips to keep your pets safe:
- Do not bring pets to a fireworks show
- Keep pets inside and in a safe place
- Close curtains and windows to cut down on the noise and lights from fireworks
- If your dog suffers from anxiety, dog-calming treats and an anxiety vest can help
Miller also suggested creating a calming space for them.
“What I like to do is turn on some NPR or some really relaxing radio, and crank that up, put them in their crate or someplace where they know is safe,” Miller said.
Before the fireworks start, make sure your pet is fed and has plenty of water. Vets also advise giving your pet an active and productive day so they will be restful by nighttime.
Also, you should ensure your pets are wearing a collar with a tag just in case they get scared and run away.
