Sweet Penelope joined the shelter at Nassau Humane Society approximately a year ago as a puppy, discovered alongside her brother under a bridge.
After being adopted, she faced adversity when she was surrendered back to the shelter on May 1. The reason?
She had ingested an 18″ sock or stocking, causing a significant blockage in her stomach. Remarkably, she endured two weeks without eating before her owner sought veterinary assistance.
Unfortunately, the financial burden of the necessary veterinary treatment led to her return to the shelter.
Fortunately, she underwent emergency surgery and is currently recuperating. Once she regains her strength and fully heals, she will be ready for adoption.
The shelter, as always, relies on the support of the community to provide care for animals like her.
The Nassau Humane Society is committed to promoting the humane treatment of all animals. Their mission is to alleviate suffering and neglect among animals, while also fostering the human-animal bond. They strive to create an environment where people respect all living creatures.
In pursuit of their mission, the Nassau Humane Society tackles the most pressing animal welfare issues in their community, particularly animal overpopulation and homelessness. Their approach prioritizes solutions that benefit both pets and people.
The society offers rescue and control services as a lifeline for animals in distress and to ensure the safety of the community. They actively promote pet adoption, animal-assisted therapy, pet care education, outreach spay and neuter programs, and other initiatives to support animal welfare.
