River City Plus: 5 cyber security tips for parents

Dar and Jen launched OUR Rescue Northeast Florida just over a year ago as a volunteer-based organization representing the national nonprofit OUR Rescue (www.ourrescue.org). Although the local branch is not directly involved in rescue operations, their mission on the First Coast focuses on three key goals:

1. Raising awareness: They aim to start conversations about human trafficking to bring attention to the issue.

2. Prevention through education: Knowledge is power, and they share tips to help keep children safe from trafficking threats.

3. Fundraising: Their efforts support the national organization’s rescue missions, which include breaking down doors, saving children, training law enforcement, and supporting survivor recovery.

As part of Cyber Security Awareness Month, OUR Rescue NE FL is offering five tips to help parents protect their children online:

1. Educate your kids: Open a dialogue about online dangers.

2. Monitor apps: Be aware of the apps your children use and who they are interacting with.

3. Protect their digital footprint: Set privacy settings and teach your children what personal information, like addresses or contact details, should never be posted.

4. Identify fake accounts: Help children recognize suspicious profiles, including accounts with no pictures or cartoon avatars.

5. Establish boundaries: Set age-appropriate guidelines and rules for internet use.

The community is encouraged to join OUR Rescue NE FL in the fight against human trafficking. Get involved by following their Facebook group (https://www.facebook.com/groups/ourrescuenortheastflorida) and participating in their events.
