NAMIWalks is the year’s most important fundraising event for the National Alliance on Mental Illness Jacksonville. The walk takes place on Saturday, Oct. 19, beginning at 9 am at the Winston Family YMCA. It features a scenic walk route along the St. Johns River, dozens of information stations representing mental health organizations throughout the city, and fun and music for all ages. NAMI Jacksonville, an affiliate of the National Alliance on Mental Illness, offers free support, education, and advocacy for people living with mental illness in Jacksonville and the people who love and care for them. Programs include support groups, stigma seminars for schools and organizations, a helpline connecting people to critical resources, and opportunities to communicate with public policy makers about laws that help or hinder mental health. Mental illness is one of the most widespread problems facing the community, state, and nation, profoundly impacting every aspect of American life. Applying national estimates to Jacksonville, there are hundreds of thousands of adults and young people living with mental illness in our community, and that does not include the people who care for them who also have free access to NAMI Jacksonville programming.
