AARP to host free ‘Arts and Brain Health’ event on mental wellness Thursday at the Ritz Theatre & Museum

The steps to improve your brain health as you age

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Wednesday is National Stress Awareness Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness about the impact of stress on individuals’ physical and mental well-being.

Stress can play an impactful role in an individual’s brain and health. And as we get closer to the end of the year, AARP wants to provide community members with valuable information on dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.

On Thursday, Nov. 7, AARP is hosting a “AARP’s Cultural Expressions: The Arts & Brain Health” event. The event will focus on healthcare and the role of the arts in supporting people living with Alzheimer’s and dementia, as well as enhancing brain health as we age.

Jill Auld, Associate State Director of Outreach & Engagement at AARP, told News4JAX the event was inspired by Jacksonville’s history of brain health.

“In Jacksonville, we have over 300,000 residents over the age of 50, and through our AARP surveys, we know brain health is a top priority for our members and non-members,” Auld said. “We have a lot of people who are caretakers for loved ones with dementia and Alzheimer’s, and we want to provide community members with resources.”

During the event, community members will receive information from ElderSource, Mayo Clinic’s Alzheimer’s Research Center, Alzheimer’s Association and AARP.

Reese Dickerson, a local artist and community leader, said the event will also explain how the arts affect brain health. Individuals will hear stories of local artists and musicians, network with key players in the nonprofit and healthcare industries, and gain the essential resources about how they can take care of their own, and family member’s, mental health and wellbeing,” the website said.

“During the event, we will talk about my family’s journey... a lot of artists don’t understand what we do affects brain health,” Dickerson said.
