JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Florida Gators continued their recent dominance of FSU with a 1-0 win at the Baseball Grounds Tuesday night.
Florida has won their last seven meetings with FSU and 12 of the last 13. The teams have split the 12 meetings at the Baseball Grounds.
The Gators scored the game's only run in the bottom of the fourth. Gators left fielder Austin Langworthy singled to right driving in Will Dalton.
In just his third career start Florida freshman pitcher Jack Leftwich picked up the win while not allowing a single hit through the first five innings. Leftwich gave way to fellow freshman Jordan Butler who pitched a pair of scoreless innings before leaving the game up to junior closer Michael Byrne.
"I can't say enough about the effort of those two freshmen in front of almost 10,000 people," said Florida head coach Kevin O'Sullivan. "To give up one hit [combined] against a Top 5 team like that is just a great performance, and it needed to be that way because Andrew Karp was just as good."
FSU put runners on first and third in the 9th with one out but Byrne struck out Rhett Aplin and got Cal Raleigh to ground to first to the end the game.
Florida improves to 22-5 and will host Vanderbilt this weekend while FSU falls to 20-6. The Seminoles host Louisville this weekend.
The announced attendance was 9,613.
