Rank, School, Record, Classification

1. St. Johns Country Day (5-1, Class 2A)

Quality wins: Houston County (Ga.), LaGrange (Ga.), Madison Central (Miss.).

Glance: No question about this. The Spartans open the Super 6 at No. 1 for the second straight season. St. Johns was the 2A state runner-up last season and returns a boatload of talent. Its early body of work is stout. It has three high quality Ws to start; 8-5 over Madison Central, 9-2 over Houston County and 8-3 to host LaGrange in tournament action in early March. Its lone loss, 8-7 to Buford, was still an excellent performance. Madison Central went 34-2 and won a state title last year in Mississippi. Houston County was a Class 6A Georgia state champ last season after going 33-7. LaGrange is 10-4 this season and won 21 games in 2021. The Spartans’ loss came to an 11-0 Buford, Ga. team that is currently ranked No. 3 in the country by MaxPreps and was 32-2 a season ago.

2. Clay (7-1, Class 4A)

Quality wins: Bishop Kenny, Bolles, Episcopal.

Glance: The Blue Devils have won five straight, three of them quality Ws — 10-4 over Episcopal, 8-1 over Bolles and 7-3 over Bishop Kenny. Their lone loss wasn’t a good one, a 4-0 defeat to a 3-9 Effingham County, but they’ve bounced back in a big way. Brady Greene (.429), Jayden Long (.381), Logan Wilson (.375) and Max Williams (.375) lead the offense. Brandon Adams (3-0, 0.45 ERA, 19 Ks, 15.2 IP) has been the dominant arm.

3. Fletcher (4-0, Class 6A)

Quality wins: Bartram Trail, Bolles.

Glance: Right out of the gate, the Senators toppled a very strong Bartram team, 4-2. Malachi Witherspoon struck out 12 and Kyson Witherspoon whiffed seven in a combined three-hitter. Yes, 19 combined Ks against one of the best lineups in town. They outslugged Bolles 10-7 after that. In a 6-5 win over Tocoi Creek on March 4, Andrew Veniard, Garrett Burton, Vinnie Sicilia and Kyson Witherspoon whiffed 14 in a combined no-hitter. Fletcher has Lake Highland Prep up next on Friday.

4. Bishop Snyder (4-0, Class 3A)

Quality wins: Creekside, Episcopal, Fernandina Beach, Hilliard.

Glance: Four solid local wins to start for the Cardinals, who beat the Pirates 9-1, the Eagles 6-4, the Red Flashes 10-0 and the Knights 11-10. Sebastian Ortiz (.462), Nick Wrubluski (.429) and Luke Seibert (.400) are all hitting .400 or better for the Cardinals. Wrubluski and Aidan King have shouldered the load on the mound, combining to throw 20.1 innings and striking out 40. Snyder has been off since March 4 but returns with three straight games this week, Paxon on Thursday, Stanton on Friday and Fernandina Beach on Saturday.

5. Trinity Christian (4-2, Class 2A)

Quality wins: Etowah (Ala.), Florence (Ala.), Nease, Oakleaf

Glance: Solid start for the Conquerors, who went 2-2 at in tournament action. Trinity beat Florence, a 29-9 state semifinalist in Alabama last season, 5-1. It also beat Etowah 10-1. Its losses came to Huntsville and Helena. The Conquerors returned home Monday night and handed Oakleaf its first loss of the season, 3-0. Jacob Miller (.556) and Colton Avera (.500) are pacing Trinity at the plate. They’ve combined for 13 of Trinity’s 25 RBI and both HRs.

6. Columbia (7-1, Class 5A)

Quality wins: Gainesville, North Florida Christian, Suwannee, Union County.

Glance: The first Super 6 rankings always have one spot in them that have a tossup for a spot. This is it. Flip a coin on the final team, with programs like Bartram Trail, Bolles, Providence and Sandalwood in the conversation for this spot. Those four teams have all played more challenging schedules than Columbia, but the Tigers have won seven in a row. Their lone loss was the season opener to Sandalwood. I do think the aforementioned teams make it in the rankings, possibly as early as next week after Spring Break tournaments run their course. Brayden Thomas (.500), Branson Mann (.462), Ty Jackson (.444) and Hayden Gustavson (.435) headlining the Columbia offense. The pitching staff has a combined 1.45 ERA.
