Ex-Gators star Patric Young ‘in great spirits’ as he continues recovery from serious car accident

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Former Providence and University of Florida men’s basketball star Patric Young continues his recovery from a serious car accident last month and posted an update on social media Wednesday morning to detail his next step in the process.

“Hey everybody, exactly two weeks since my accident, first milestone of many to come. In great spirits, thank you everybody so much for your thoughts and prayers. I’m about to ring this bell. Close one chapter. Can’t wait for the next one,” Young said. “Be headed up to Colorado really soon. So, everyone thank you again so much for the love and support it keeps me going and I hopefully I can continue to inspire you guys as I’m going.”

Young was injured in a one-car rollover accident near Verdigre, Nebraska on June 29, according to the Yankton Daily. He suffered serious injuries and been hospitalized at Avera McKennan Hospital and University Health Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota since. In the video, Young is in a wheelchair with a brace on his back.

While at Florida, Young scored in double figures and grabbed more than six rebounds per game in three consecutive years as a starter. As a senior Young averaged 11 points and 6.2 rebounds per game. He was the SEC defensive player of the year in 2014 as a senior and was a three-time SEC scholar-athlete of the year.

Young spent four seasons playing in Europe after his college career.

In high school at Providence, Young was a McDonald’s All-American in his final season in 2009-10 and led the Stallions to the Class 2A state championship.
