Players Championship finalizes field, but no Tiger Woods this year

Golfer Rory McIlroy speaks as he and Tiger Woods discuss the future home of their tech-infused golf league that will begin play next year, Tuesday, Feb. 21, 2023, on the campus of Palm Beach State College in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. The Players Championship announced its 144-player field on Friday afternoon with a couple notable omissions.

The bad news for area golf fans — no Tiger Woods.

Woods played in the Genesis Invitational two weeks ago and it was longshot of him returning to TPC Sawgrass.

Woods, a two-time winner of the event, last competed at Sawgrass in 2019.

Despite Woods’ absence and that of defending champion Cameron Smith, 49 of the world’s top 50 golfers have committed to the event at TPC Sawgrass.

The Players has world No. 1 Jon Rahm in the field as well as eight previous winners of the tournament, including Rory McIlroy. The event tees off on Thursday at the Stadium Course in Ponte Vedra Beach.
