JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The opening round of the girls high school basketball playoffs are in the books and the area’s favorites held strong.
Top seeds Bishop Kenny (1-4A) and Providence (1-3A) won handily, with the Crusaders beating South Walton 59-41 and the Stallions dropping Episcopal by the same score. Kenny, the No. 1 team in the Super 6 the bulk of the season, will host Ribault on Monday.

The Trojans led by 20 over Paxon in the second half but the Golden Eagles made a game of it late before Ribault pulled away for a 65-60 win. Among other notable first-round winners were Ridgeview with a 43-38 win over St. Augustine in 1-5A, Bolles with a 57-44 win over Pensacola on the road in 1-4A and Ponte Vedra in OT over Springstead, 46-43 in 1-6A.
