Fletcher High flag football ready to earn respect with Elite 8 playoff game

Fletcher High’s Flag Football team will compete Tuesday night in the state’s Elite 8 for the first time. – Fletcher High’s Flag Football team will compete Tuesday night in the state’s Elite 8 for the first time.

They left town around 10 a.m. for Pensacola to take on Pace High School.

The team is so excited for this history making moment for their school.

The coach and multiple players told News4JAX they’ve worked really hard to get here and plan to give it their all.

“Honestly, we are very excited to be able to make it this far. We’re like super hyped,” quarterback Jasmine Cross said.

Cross helped lead the team in a major win over Flemming Island last week that sent them to this round of the playoffs for the first time.

But Head Coach Bradely Ashmore said it’s how the girls play together that led them to this moment.

“As a girls program, we have yet to do some of the things we were able to do this year and it’s been exciting,” Ashmore said.

The girls are making strides in a sport that they say is still overlooked.

Ashley Mohrmann, a graduating senior on the team got a scholarship to Daytona State to play flag football, but she says people don’t really get it.

“People actually could not believe that I was signing for flag football in college and people didn’t actually believe that it was an actual sport,” Mohrmann said. “People didn’t believe that women could play football in general, but I proved them wrong.”

Regardless of the naysayers, these athletes are putting in work on and off the field. Their hope is to keep making history, bringing more respect to girls flag football.

If they take home Tuesday night’s win, they’ll be headed to the Tampa area or South Florida next week.
