Jaguars training camp notebook: Back to work before the Bucs

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Am I the only one just marking days on the calendar trying to get to Wednesday for joint practices? Maybe it is just me but with that, there’s just a couple of days away from the Jaguars hosting the Buccaneers for the first of two joint practices. Everything else just feels like a let down.

Monday’s practice was a glorified walkthrough. It was a clean-up day. After Saturday’s game against the Chiefs, they used the practice to clean up mistakes and start to prep for the Bucs. Tuesday will be more of the same.

For players trying to earn roles on the roster, the joint practices are huge. But for players that were on the team last season there be a little revenge factor there as well.

“We gotta get our get back,” said cornerback Buster Brown.

Brown was a top reserve for the Jaguars last season and has a potential game-winning pass breakup against the Saints as his highlight play. Brown is going into his third year in the NFL and said he is “just taking it one day at a time.”

Training camp is a long road and Brown is in a battle to earn a spot in the DB room. With a new coaching staff, things are different for everyone but Brown is loving it.

“I feel like it is the best role for me,” he said.

Maybe the biggest change on the defense is in the secondary. It is shifting from a zone-heavy scheme to a man-to-man-heavy scheme. The DB room all seems to love the switch.

“Gotta love it, gotta embrace it, too” said Brown.

  • Andrew Wingard is going to miss some time. Doug Pederson mentioned him being on a similar timeline for availability as Tashaun Gipson who is suspended for the first six weeks of the season.
  • Anton Harrison is cleared and back at practice.
  • Arik Armstead could be back at practice next week.
  • It was a walk-through. Enough said
  • Highs and lows of the day: The High was Darnell Savage with the interception off a pass from Trevor Lawrence. The low was that the pass hit Tank Bigsby in the hands before it landed in Savage’s hands.
  • Mac Jones continues to look sharp.
  • Brenton Stange had a nice touchdown catch over Andrew Parker Jr.
  • Ventrell Miller is explosive. He can really cover some ground. The biggest question mark with him seems to be can he stay healthy?
  • Breeland Speaks is new to the team and heat took him off the practice field briefly. He was able to return and finish practice.
