News4JAX Varsity 4 Week 2 Super 10 football rankings

Rank, previous, school, classification

1. (1) Mandarin (1-0, Class 6A)

Last week: beat Creekside, 57-13. This week: at Atlantic Coast (0-1), 6:30 p.m.

Glance: The Mustangs wiped out Creekside in Week 1, ending a three-year slide against the Knights. Even more impressive than the 57 Mandarin put up was that the Mustangs defense held high-powered Creekside to just 13. The question for me was on defense and how Mandarin would perform after a slew of graduation losses. The Mustangs answered that emphatically.

2. (2) St. Augustine (1-0, Class 4A)

Last week: beat Palatka, 42-6. This week: at Menendez (0-1).

Glance: No challenge last week for the Yellow Jackets, who belted the rival Panthers for the 11th consecutive game. St. Augustine could get a more competitive game against another rival in Menendez, but the Yellow Jackets are 22-1 all-time against their southern St. Johns County foe.

3. (4) Raines (1-0, Class 3A)

Last week: beat Bolles, 32-23. This week: at Sandalwood (0-1), 6:30 p.m.

Glance: If there were any doubt that the Vikings had a special team, last week swept those away. Raines controlled both lines of scrimmage against Bolles and ended years of frustration with a win that was close but felt farther apart. I know it’s early, but the only two games on the schedule that feel like they’ll be remotely competitive after watching the Vikings are Mainland (Week 4) Madison County (Week 8).

4. (5) Bartram Trail (1-0), 6A

Last week: beat Sumner, 34-12. This week: vs. Ponte Vedra (0-1), Varsity 4 Game of the Week.

Glance: Great open for the Bears, who handled Sumner with ease. Knocking around a team coming off an 11-2, regional final season in Class 4M was a very good start for Bartram. A clash against the county rival Sharks in the Varsity 4 Game of the Week is up next.

5. (7) Bradford (1-0, Class 2A)

Last week: beat Baker County, 13-7. This week: vs. Dunnellon (1-0), 7:30 p.m.

Glance: The Tornadoes know how to win big and know how to win in these dogfight games. Their win over the Wildcats was their fifth straight in the series. Dunnellon is always a tough opponent.

6. (3) Bolles (0-1, Class 2A)

Last week: lost to (3) Raines, 32-23. This week: at Trinity Christian.

Glance: Tough opener for the offense, which did little against powerful Raines. They’ve got an always difficult opponent up next in a young Trinity, followed by a visit to No. 2 St. Augustine in Week 3.

7. (NR) Oakleaf (1-0, Class 6A)

Last week: beat previous No. 6 Riverside, 35-7. This week: at Orange Park (1-0).

Glance: Welcome to the Super 10, Knights. Oakleaf was ranked last season after a 2-0 start, then proceeded to lost six of its final seven games. The Knights gashed Riverside to the tune of 501 yards in the opener and heled the Generals to just one score. That’s a heck of a start.

8. (NR) Nease (1-0, Class 6A)

Last week: beat previous No. 10 Ponte Vedra, 24-7. This week: at Creekside.

Glance: With wins in three of its last four games against the rival Sharks, I think we can skip calling that one an upset any longer. Collin Drafts’ team locked up Ponte Vedra’s offense with just 241 yards allowed. LB Joe Miracle III had four tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks and a pick in that win. Up next is the annual shootout game with Creekside, where high scores have dotted this St. Johns County clash.

9. (NR) Trinity Christian (1-0, Class 1A)

Last week: beat White, 21-18. This week: vs. (6) Bolles (0-1).

Glance: The Conquerors are young, yes. But that didn’t matter last week in a quality road W over the Commanders. The defense held White to under 300 yards in a great showing. The book on Trinity when it has a young team — get the Conquerors early before they get coached up.

10. (NR) Beachside (1-0, Class 5A)

Last week: beat Orlando Christian Prep, 42-16. This week: at Englewood (0-1), 6:30 p.m.

Glance: The Barracudas are riding an area-high 10-game winning streak and thumped a smaller — but quality OCP — program in Week 1. The knock on Beachside in its brief history is a serious lack of competition and it’s a very valid point. The only win over a playoff team before last week was over Class 1M Providence in Week 11 last year, a Stallions team that was missing its starting QB.
