Rank, previous, School, Record, Classification

1. (1) Mandarin (2-0, Class 6A)

Last week: beat Atlantic Coast, 47-0; This week: vs. Sandalwood (0-2), 6:30 p.m.

Glance: The Mustangs are on another level from a local perspective. They have championship expectations even if QB Tramell Jones’ injury changes things in the short term. They draw a young and rebuilding Sandalwood team this week before a trip to face defense-heavy Bradford in Week 4.

2. (2) St. Augustine (2-0, Class 4A)

Last week: beat Menendez, 34-14. This week: vs. Bolles (1-1).

Glance: The Yellow Jackets handled rival Menendez, although maybe not as comfortably as expected. That’s likely due to the Falcons being better than expected. The competition jumps another level this week with the Bulldogs headed to town for what should be an excellent clash.

3. (3) Raines (2-0, Class 3A)

Last week: beat Sandalwood, 43-0. This week: vs. Trinity Christian (1-1), 6:30 p.m.

Glance: The Vikings are very good, although it’s difficult to show just how good they are against a rebuilding team like Sandalwood. Trinity is another young team and the Vikings should be able to handle this week relatively smoothly as well.

4. (5) Bradford (2-0, Class 2A)

Last week: beat Dunnellon, 29-14. This week: vs. South Sumter (1-1), 7:30 p.m.

Glance: Defense. Defense. Defense. The Tornadoes are up to their usual tricks, squeezing opposing offenses out on a weekly basis. Another challenging opponent this week before a visit from a powerful Mandarin squad in Week 4.

5. (6) Bolles (1-1, Class 2A)

Last week: beat Trinity Christian, 41-7. This week: at (2) St. Augustine (2-0).

Glance: The Bulldogs bounced back from a tough opener with a romp over Trinity Christian. Defense was in control of that one, limiting the Conquerors to just 198 total yards. Very tough Week 3 showdown at St. Augustine.

6. (8) Nease (2-0, Class 6A)

Last week: beat Creekside, 45-7. This week: vs. Ridge Community (1-1).

Glance: Did we underestimate the Panthers a bit? Through the first two weeks, Nease has been wicked tough on the defensive side of the ball and cranked things up offensively, too. The series with Creekside has been entertaining through the years but Nease removed any suspense from the latest installment. The schedule jumps considerably after this week, with games against Fletcher, St. Augustine, Buchholz and Bartram Trail up in Weeks 6 through 8.

7. (7) Oakleaf (2-0, Class 6A)

Last week: beat Orange Park, 42-0. This week: at Fleming Island (1-1).

Glance: The Knights have been excellent to start the season, with their 35-7 romp over Riverside looking even better this week. QB Jack McKissock has been carving up defenses and RB Chris Foy II has been a sledgehammer on the ground.

8. Ponte Vedra (1-1, Class 6A)

Last week: beat Bartram Trail, 28-21. This week: vs. Baker County (1-1).

Glance: The Sharks started in the Super 10 and then fell out after a 24-7 loss to Nease in Week 1. But going to Bartram and winning for just the third time in series history was huge. The offensive and defensive lines were massive in that game. That’s followed by a tough assignment in Baker County, a team that is right on the edge of the Super 10 cut.

9. (4) Bartram Trail (1-1), 6A

Last week: lost to Ponte Vedra, 28-21. This week: at Ware County (2-1), 7:30 p.m., Thursday

Glance: The Bears tumble after a loss to the rival Sharks. They do have a win over Sumner, an 11-2 regional finalist last season. But they go from a difficult county opponent to a face a Ware County team that won a state championship in 2022 and has become one of the most consistent teams in the Peach State.

10. (10) Beachside (2-0, Class 5A)

Last week: beat Englewood, 58-14. This week: vs. Menendez (1-1), Thursday

Glance: Barracudas have won 11 consecutive games dating back to last season. I’m going to have them locked into this No. 10 spot until their competition increases, which happens the next two weeks with Menendez and then Ponte Vedra.
