(5) Bolles (1-1) at (2) St. Augustine (2-0), Varsity 4 Game of the Week

One of the best matchups of the season happens in Week 3. The Yellow Jackets played for the Class 3S state championship last year and lost on a walk-off field goal to Daytona Beach Mainland. Bolles is always a contender for a deep playoff run. The Bulldogs have reached no worse than the state semifinals in all of head coach Matt Toblin’s five seasons. Bolles had won five straight against the Yellow Jackets before St. Augustine scored the final 22 points of the game including a 36-yard TD strike from Locklan Hewlett to Myles Simmons as the decider with 15 seconds to play. The Bulldogs lead the all-time series 12-11. Before that, the Yellow Jackets hadn’t beaten Bolles since 1978. Offense is the headliner for St. Augustine, with Hewlett and WRs Carl Jenkins Jr., Somourian Wingo and Trenton Jones all back. The change for the Yellow Jackets comes in the backfield where its been by committee after the graduation of high production back Devonte Lyons. RB Trendell Anderson (22 games, 184 yards) is the big name and he’s scored five times in two games. Both defenses will have their challenges. Bolles freshman DL Asher Ghioto has been a menace for Bolles. He’ll try and get by one of the area’s biggest offensive linemen in St. Augustine left guard Joshua Singleton (6-5, 320). The Bulldogs have two very good wideouts in Chase Collier and Naeem Burroughs, field stretchers who can turn short gains into home run balls. RBs Emmett Grzebin has been chewing up the carries. TE Caden Fordham has been a factor inside the 10. He’s got a pair of TD catches.

Baker County (1-1) at (8) Ponte Vedra (1-1), postponed to Oct. 3, 6 p.m.

A collision of two good defenses that should turn this into a slugfest. The Sharks were very good in a Week 2 win over Bartram Trail, controlling the line of scrimmage with a battalion of rushers. DLs Martin Geary, Robbie Grieco and Ryker Kemp were constant thorns in the side of the Bears last week and changed the tone of the game. They’ve got swarming bodies in the middle of the field and secondary (Mason Houseman, JM Pawlick, Talan Babin and JP Dolan). RB Brian Case and WRs Davitt Doherty and Cam Tietze open things up for QB Drew Price. DL Phillip Jackson has resumed wreaking havoc on opposing teams. He’s got three sacks and 15 tackles in the first two games for the Wildcats. LB Seth Chestnut has 18 tackles and a pick for Baker County and has been one of the best players in the area in his career. Owen Hodges, Kale Crews and Case Foster seem to be around every play. RBs Ke’nais Williams and Keshawn Kennedy tag team the offensive workload. QB Hudson Register (17 of 25, 208 yards, TD) has been precise through the air.

Bishop Kenny (2-0) at Tocoi Creek (2-0)

A very good early season matchup between two surging teams. Kenny has squashed its two opponents (84-17) and now enters a challenging three-game stretch. It won this game 23-20 last year and has a shot to enter Bolles week unbeaten. QB Derek Heideman has been marksman accurate (12 of 17, 414 yards, 7 TDs) and also rushed for a TD. WR JP Donovan (190 yards, 3 TDs on 4 catches) has been the big target. DB AJ Alicea has a couple picks during Kenny’s fast start on defense. For the Toros, QB Ryan Killmer has been a four-year player and has found the end zone four times as a rusher this season. DE Garrett Mitchell (11 tackles, 4 TFL, 3 sacks) has been the most disruptive player for Tocoi Creek. LB Blake Warner (22 tackles, 2 TFL) is averaging 11 tackles a game.

(7) Oakleaf (2-0) at Fleming Island (1-1)

The Knights have been sizzling. QB Jack McKissock (22 of 28, 406 yards, 4 TDs) has been sniping opposing defenses. Added to McKissock’s live arm has been the battering ram ground game of RB Chris Foy II (275 rushing yards, 4 TDs, 9.8 ypc). LBs Bryan Copeland and Jermaine Robinson have combined for 25 tackles. The Golden Eagles surged back to top county rival Clay in Week 1, then struggled to stop Riverside in the second half during a loss last week. If Fleming can balance those two issues out then it can flip this rivalry back in its direction. RB Demhir Jackson (210 rushing yards, TD) has already surpassed his output from last season. QB Cibastian Broughton is Fleming’s top offensive threat and he missed last week’s loss. WR Trace Burney (9 catches, 103 yards, 2 TDs) is Fleming’s top aerial threat. Golden Eagles interim head coach Derek Chipoletti knows Oakleaf well. He led the Knights to their best season in program history, going 12-1 in 2014.

Next four to watch

Fletcher (2-0) at Atlantic Coast (1-1), 6:30 p.m.

The Senators have thumped Ribault and Parker to start the season. Freshman QB Cruz James-Bazek has started well (27 for 40, 336 yards, 3 TDs). RB Jahmyri Jennings (165 rushing yards, 4 TDs) and WR Solomon Pinkney (157 receiving yards, 2 TDs) supply the jolt elsewhere. The Senators have dominated this series, winning 12 of 13 meetings and holding the Stingrays to a touchdown or less seven times. RB Jordyn Bell and WR Jerimiah Evans lead Atlantic Coast, which has mustered just 10 points in two games this year.

Old Plank (2-0) at St. Joseph (3-0)

Surprising matchup of unbeatens. The first-year 11-man FHSAA season for the Defenders has seen a fast start, with RB Leonard Holton (225 yards, 2 TDs) and QB Troy Howell (211 yards, 3 TDs) leading the way. St. Joseph QB Cody Ott (505 passing yards, 7 TDs), RB Jack Fox (331 rushing yards, 5 TDs and WR Jeremiah Kes (282 receiving yards, 3 TDs) powering St. Joseph’s surge. The Flashes have allowed just 12 points this season.

Providence (2-0) at Palatka (1-1)

Very evenly matched clash featuring playoff teams from last season who return solid QBs in Mason Williams (Providence) and Tommy Offord (Palatka). Offord has rushed for 274 yards and three TDs while Williams has passed for 303 yards and four TDs.

Trinity Christian (1-1) at (3) Raines (2-0), 6:30 p.m.

Typically a headlining matchup, the Vikings’ experience and the Conquerors’ youth tilts this one the opposite way this year. Raines may be the area’s best team. QB Timothy Cole has been key for the Vikings, both with his legs and his arm. Adron Walker and Kaleb Lampkins have combined for 254 yards and four TD catches. The defense is nasty good. Trinity QB Hicks Zarah poses a threat with his feet and has scored a couple TDs. DB Kaleel Vereen and LB Jacob Weldon (combined 29 tackles) are leading the way on defense for Trinity.
