Rank, previous, School, Record, Classification

1. (1) Mandarin (3-0, Class 6A)

Last week: beat Sandalwood, 41-0. This week: at (4) Bradford (3-0), 7:30 p.m.

Glance: The Mustangs have allowed 13 points all season, albeit to teams who are currently a combined 1-8. This week is a significant jump up in competition. Mandarin and Bradford both played in state championship games last year. This should be a good test for the new-look offense led by QB Knox Annis.

2. (2) St. Augustine (2-0, Class 4A)

Last week: vs. Bolles, canceled. This week: vs. Riverside (2-1).

Glance: A disappointing weather cancellation last week against Bolles. Next up is a different type of challenge in the Generals. Riverside’s defense has been leaky, which should be a promising sign for the Yellow Jackets. But Riverside can put up points. Will be interesting to see how St. Augustine covers WRs Tae’shaun Gelsey and Myles Kendrick.

3. (3) Raines (3-0, Class 3A)

Last week: beat Trinity Christian, 48-23. This week: vs. Daytona Beach Mainland (0-3), 6:30 p.m.

Glance: Raines started a bit slow last week against Trinity but its depth is what will overwhelm teams in the second halves of games. I don’t think there is a team in the area better on both lines than Raines. DLs Geterius Brown and Jyon Simon are wreckers. This is a bit of a redemption game. Mainland crushed Raines last year (26-0) en route to a Class 3S state championship.

4. (4) Bradford (3-0, Class 2A)

Last week: beat South Sumter, 28-7. This week: vs. (1) Mandarin (3-0), 7:30 p.m.

Glance: Major test for the Tornadoes, whose defense ranks as one of the area’s most difficult for opposing teams to figured out.

5. (6) Bolles (1-1, Class 2A)

Last week: at St. Augustine, canceled. This week: vs. Bishop Kenny (3-0), game moved to Bolles due to field conditions, 7:30 p.m.

Glance: The Bulldogs lost out on a clash at No. 2 St. Augustine due to the weather. Now, they get a red-hot Crusaders team that will no doubt have their attention. Drumming Kenny used to be an annual guarantee but the Crusaders changed that with a 14-13 upset in 2022 that ended a 27-game losing streak that dated back to the 1970s.

6. (6) Nease (2-0, Class 6A)

Last week: vs. Ridge Community, canceled. This week: vs. Fletcher (3-0).

Glance: The Panthers have been rock solid on both sides of the ball, allowing just a touchdown in each of their first two games. Fletcher has won three straight in this series so Nease can’t afford to look past this one and ahead to rival St. Augustine in Week 5.

7. (7) Oakleaf (3-0, Class 6A)

Last week: beat Fleming Island, 17-13. This week: at Hawthorne (2-1), 7:30 p.m.

Glance: Oakleaf has won big and won small this season, which is the type of start that it needed. The next three weeks are crucial. Hawthorne is a monster rural program, and games against Bolles and Fletcher are after this one.

8. Ponte Vedra (1-1, Class 6A)

Last week: vs. Baker County, postponed to Oct. 3. This week: vs. (10) Beachside (2-0).

Glance: There’s a big St. Johns County clash for the Sharks, who draw surging Beachside in what should develop into the next great area rivalry. Last time we saw Ponte Vedra, it was creating all sorts of problems for No. 9 Bartram Trail.

9. (9) Bartram Trail (2-1), 6A

Last week: beat Ware County, 43-42 (OT). This week: at Creekside (0-3).

Glance: Talk about a clutch win. The Bears led 21-0 last week, trailed late and then won it on a walk-off two-point conversion. Doesn’t get much better than that. The defense needs to tighten up but it was good to see Bartram be able to dial up the offense against a quality program. Bartram is 16-1 all-time against Creekside.

10. (10) Beachside (2-0, Class 5A)

Last week: vs. Menendez, postponed to Oct. 1. This week: at Ponte Vedra (1-1).

Glance: This is a massive game for the Barracudas. It’s no secret that they scheduled light in their first two seasons to get a foundation in place. Now that it’s up and running, Beachside needs to see how it stacks up against more established programs. The District 3-5A opener against the Sharks is that first test.
