Varsity 4 Super 6 volleyball: Beachside jumps to No. 3 as season heats up

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The News4JAX Varsity 4 Super 6 high school volleyball rankings will be published each Wednesday during the regular season. Records are through Sept. 17 games.

Rank, school, record, classification

1. (1) Middleburg (11-3, Class 5A)

Notable win: Bob Jones (Ala.), Fleming Island, Jackson Academy (Miss.), Ponte Vedra, Providence, Timber Creek.

Glance: The Broncos have held the top spot all season and show no signs of sliding. They beat Fleming Island 3-1 since our last Super 6. They’ve got Oakleaf (Thursday) and then Mari King and a quality Trinity Christian on Tuesday. Brooke Forkum (186 kills) and Camden Rahn (159 kills) remain two of the best hitters in the area. Morgan Padgett (200 digs) and Olivia Callipo (379 assists) supply the defense and offense for Middleburg.

2. (2) Bishop Kenny (10-3, Class 4A)

Notable wins: Bartram Trail, Creekside, Fleming Island, Gainesville, Providence, Wesley Chapel, Windermere.

Glance: The Crusaders went 1-1 since our last Super 6, losing in a sweep to powerful Chiles and then pulling a 3-0 on a quality Providence. Two big ones to circle on the calendar next week — Trinity Christian on Monday and Beachside on Tuesday. Olivia Ryno (118 kills) eclipsed the 100-kill mark since the last update, and Sofia Muino (93 kills) is knocking on the door. Alexis Sowers (142 digs), Caroline Snyder (191 assists) and Lily Brady (124 assists) follow Kenny’s big hitters.

3. (4) Beachside (10-2, Class 5A)

Notable wins: Bolles, Flagler Palm Coast, New Smyrna Beach, Ponte Vedra, Providence, Trinity Christian.

Glance: The Barracudas went 4-1 since our last Super 6, headlined by a sweep of Ponte Vedra. That atoned for a 3-1 loss to the Sharks last month. There’s a big clash against Creekside on Wednesday night and then No. 2 Bishop Kenny next week. Adriana Jeanpierre (152 kills) and Mollie VanDeusen (92 kills) lead the attack. while Isabella Tavares has 163 digs, while Jayden Roberts and Erica Duffy have combined for 296 assists to keep the offense running smoothly.

4. (6) Creekside (12-3, Class 7A)

Notable wins: Bartram Trail, Bishop Snyder, Bolles, Fleming Island (twice), New Smyrna Beach.

Glance: The Knights had a massive week of games, rolling to a 6-1 mark. The biggest wins in that stretch came in sweeps of Fleming Island and New Smyrna Beach. They lost to a quality Hagerty team. A surging Beachside is up next on Wednesday. Vivian Scuteri is up to 135 kills followed by Sarahbelle Jameson (115 kills) and Bridget Spees (91 kills). Killian Burnett has 206 digs and Lindsay Hopkins leads the team with 357 assists.

5. (3) Ponte Vedra (5-3, Class 5A)

Notable wins: Beachside, Harvest, Providence, Trinity Christian.

Glance: The Sharks went 1-2 since our last Super 6, losing to powerful Chiles and Beachside by sweep and then beating a solid Trinity Christian. Ponte Vedra has a win over Beachside, too. Tournament action on Friday means the Sharks get Episcopal, Bartram Trail and Ridgeview on one afternoon. Leah Grall (60 kills), Railey Player (51 kills), Lily Keely (47 kills) and Ryan Murphy (46 kills) lead an extremely balanced attack. Avery Webb (131 digs), and Haydin Froehlich and Murphy (combined 232 assists) balance the Sharks back row and offensive system.

6. (5) Mandarin (10-3, Class 7A)

Notable wins: Atlantic Coast (twice), Bolles, Creekside, Fletcher, Tocoi Creek.

Glance: The Mustangs went 4-3 since our last Super 6, The wins came over the teams that they should have beaten (Atlantic Coast, Maclay, Fernandina Beach, and Jackson) and lost to New Smyrna Beach, Santa Fe and Gainesville. Paige Wind (108 kills) and Macy Dubois (84 kills) are leading the attack. Julia Howard and Dubois have a combined 299 digs. Isabella Gomez (138) and Naylim Andrews (127) have almost split the assists down the middle).
