JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – It was a wild Week 5 of the high school football season as the halfway mark officially arrived. Here’s a glance at notables, scores and schedules from Friday night.
Changing of the guard in SJC?
Nease is for real and the Panthers reinforced that on Friday night. The Panthers erased a three-touchdown deficit to stun host and Super 6 No. 1 St. Augustine 35-34 in overtime of a St. Johns County thriller. Nease is the only unbeaten public school team remaining in St. Johns County.
Nease stopped quarterback Locklan Hewlett just short of the goal line on a two-point conversion run in OT to stun St. Augustine.
No. 5 Nease last beat the Yellow Jackets in 2018, also by a point, but this is the first win over St. Augustine for Panthers head coach Collin Drafts.
At 4-0, it’s the best start for the Panthers since 2006 when they started the post-Tim Tebow era 14-0 and reached the Class 4A championship game before losing to Tampa Plant, 25-21.
This one felt unlikely as St. Augustine raced to a 21-0 lead in the first half. A pick-six by Eli Luckett got Nease on the scoreboard in the second half but the Yellow Jackets stayed in front, going up 28-14 on a Trendell Anderson touchdown run in the fourth quarter. But Nate Harry fired a tying touchdown to Tyler Ghazanfari to get the game into OT, and threw the go-ahead touchdown in OT to a diving Maddox Spencer.
Mustangs reeling
Mandarin has now lost two consecutive games after a 3-0 start. The Mustangs drew the unfavorable assignment of going on the road to face national powerhouse IMG Academy and lost 49-6. Mandarin has been racked by injuries, including a season-ending leg injury to Elite 11 quarterback Tramell Jones.
How many unbeatens remain?
There are nine of them after Week 5.
Bradford, Christ’s Church, Flagler Palm Coast, Middleburg, Nease, Raines, St. Joseph, Union County and Zarephath Academy.
Zarephath and St. Joseph are 6-0 to lead the way. Middleburg and Union County are 5-0. The other four teams are 4-0, with all but Union County and FPC on byes in Week 5.
On the other end
Seven area programs remain in search of their first victory of the season: KIPP Bold City, Hollis Christian, Parker, Ridgeview, Sandalwood, Young Kids in Motion and Yulee.
Sandalwood had its best showing of the season on Friday night in a 47-19 loss to Fletcher. The Saints had been held scoreless in their four previous losses this year.
