Four Cents: Jaguars racing towards high draft pick, not playoffs

So, the Jaguars are 1-5. Was that what you expected this season? That’s the Jaguars record following Sunday’s embarrassing 35-16 loss to the Bears in London.

Definitely wasn’t what I expected from the Jaguars this season and I’m sure it wasn’t what Shad Khan expected from the team this season. No, Khan wasn’t misquoted but he was wrong. This is not the best team in franchise history. Not even close.

Khan told the Florida Times-Union’s Demetrius Harvey this week that he still believes in the coaching staff and in general manager Trent Baalke. And I just want to know one thing. Why? What have they done to instill confidence in their ability to get the team out of this mess? I have confidence in them to keep the Jaguars in the driver seat for the No. 1 overall pick in the draft.

I have confidence in them to manage to get the Jags flexed out of Sunday night football. I mean if those are the goals, then Khan should be confident. They shouldn’t be confident in their ability to flip the switch and turn this team around to win games. Yeah, lower those expectations to zero. I’m much more a glass-half-full kind of guy. I’d rather be talking about a comeback story and how the Jags took that bad start and flipped it and are in the race to be the race for the playoffs and talking about Stan Humpries and his connection with Doug Pederson. But that isn’t what is happening right now.

This team has problems. One of my favorite movies is “Dope” and there is a scene near the end where they talk about two bags; one is real and one is fake, and if you can tell the difference between the bags. But it ultimately doesn’t matter because it is all about how you rock it.

This Jaguars team, on paper, looked real. It Added veteran players to go along with some young talent they already had, but the product on the field says this group is clearly fake because they are what their record says they are. And the record says that since December of last year, the Jags are 2-10. Now, the coach speak of the situation is last year is behind them. It is a separate year, but it’s not. Remember when they finished 2022, they believed that momentum would carry into 2023. Well, it is a two-way street and the lack of momentum, the lack of energy and the lack of answers has carried into 2024.

Now, Khan has the tough decision of figuring out if Pederson and Baalke are real or are they fake. Because for about a year, from November 2022 to December 2023, they had the things rolling, and were 13-5 in that time span. But can they get that magic back, or has everybody seen the tag on them and knows they are fake?
