High school football ‘24: St. Aug, Oakleaf, Yulee roll on Monday night

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A Monday night edition of high school football had a slew of blowouts and an upset in the Super 10.

Yulee stretched its winning streak over Nassau County rival Fernandina Beach to 11 games with a 42-7 romp in the Varsity 4 Game of the Week. Ethan Myers returned a kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown to break the game open after the Pirates (4-4) had cut things to 20-7 early in the second half. Shamar Gibbs added a couple rushing touchdowns for Yulee (2-5).

Super 10 No. 4 St. Augustine clobbered Clay 56-6, with three interception returns for touchdowns from Jimmie Wheeler, Mason Beane and Jackson Boddy to cruise to the District 3-4A title. Carl Jenkins Jr. had a couple touchdown catches from Locklan Hewlett in a game that was a 42-0 rout by the early second quarter.

No. 10 Creekside held on for a 43-37 win over Atlantic Coast. The Knights built a 28-point lead by late in the fourth quarter before the Stingrays made a game of it late. Creekside has won four straight following an 0-3 start.

Fleming Island had the biggest win of the night, racing past No. 9 Beachside 44-17 to knock the Barracudas from the District 3-5A race. The Golden Eagles (4-3) can win the district by beating Middleburg or the Broncos losing to Beachside on Friday. Cibastian Broughton accounted for four touchdowns (two passing, two rushing) for Fleming Island.

Zarephath Academy posted the most lopsided score of the night, routing host Duval Charter 84-6 behind nine touchdown passes and 568 yards from Valdosta State commit Jordan Durham. The Eagles improved to 8-1.

No. 8 Ponte Vedra walloped previously unbeaten Middleburg 52-21 to end the Broncos’ best start since 1989. The Sharks (5-2) more than doubled what Middleburg had allowed on defense in its previous six games combined (20).

Parker won its third straight game with a 44-12 romp over Westside and kept its district title hopes alive in 4-3A. The Braves (3-4) are likely headed for a three-way district tie with Bishop Kenny and Menendez. If the Crusaders beat Westside on Oct. 25, the district title will go to team with the highest MaxPreps FHSAA ranking among Kenny, Menendez and Parker. If Westside upsets Kenny then the Falcons would win the district title based on their head-to-head win over the Braves.

Two games were pushed off with Monday’s news by the Florida High School Athletic Association that it was adding a week to the regular season due to hurricane-related cancellations and postponements. Nease and Bartram Trail pushed their game to the week of Nov. 4, as did Suwannee and Wakulla.
