Four to watch

Buchholz (5-3) at Bartram Trail (3-4)

The Bears are at a crossroads at this point in the season. They’ve tumbled out of the top eight in the FHSAA points standings and need an upset of either Buchholz or Nease over the final three games to have a shot at a playoff spot. Buchholz has won the last three games in this series, two of those in the playoffs. RB Arthur Lewis IV (1,226 rushing yards, 14 TDs) may be the area’s top back and QB Jaden Weatherly (1,119 passing yards, 10 TDs) is solid under center. But the defense hasn’t been able to keep up. When the Bears were scoring 40 and 50 points a game, that hasn’t been an issue. But Bartram’s defense is allowing 33.1 points per game and the Bears are averaging just 32.7 on offense. They’re still capable of big nights but the Bears need to play perfect in this one. The Bobcats aren’t as strong as they have been in recent seasons but they’re still very, very good.

(9) Fleming Island (5-3) at Middleburg (6-2)

The Golden Eagles are already the District 3-5A champ and have locked up a playoff spot. The next assignment is finishing strong and improve their FHSAA points ranking. Fleming is ranked just sixth in Region 1-5A, including behind two teams (Beachside, Ponte Vedra) it has already beaten. Continuing to win is imperative to help its case. QB Cibastian Broughton is having an excellent senior season (1,377 passing yards, 15 TDs, just one INT; 543 rushing yards, 7 TDs). RB Demhir Jackson (825 rushing yards, 9 TDs) is averaging nearly 10 yards per carry. WR Trace Burney (881 receiving yards, 13 TDs) is one of the best pass catchers in the area. On defense, Sebastian Cruz and David Fuentes, both underclassmen, have combing for 137 tackles. This has been a far different Golden Eagles team under interim head coach Derek Chipoletti than it was a year ago when it struggled to a 3-7 record. The Broncos’ program-best 6-0 start was an excellent storyline but it’s been a difficult two weeks since. The two teams they’ve faced with winning records, Beachside and Ponte Vedra, have won in blowouts. Ryan Wolfe’s team has shown its mettle this season and has very good players. QB Carson Stewart (1,245 passing yards, 11 TDs), RB Travis Pinkard (385 rushing yards, 5 TDs) and WR Deshun Green (415 receiving yards, 4 TDs) are the playmakers on offense, but the Broncos are better suited to win in defensive-type ballgames. DL BJ Carter (30 tackles, 6 sacks, 6 TFL) is a monster and LB Kadin Hanifen leads the team with 69 tackles.

(7) Mandarin (6-2) at (5) Oakleaf (6-2)

Likely the best game of the week is for the District 2-6A crown. The Knights have been surging and could realistically be unbeaten. Its two losses have been by a combined 13 points. Oakleaf has one of the most balanced offenses in the area. QB Jack McKissock (1,818 passing yards, 18 TDs) and RB Christopher Foy II (1,077 rushing yards, 11 TDs) are the 1-2 punch for the Knights. WRs Carlos Witherup (460 receiving yards, 5 TDs) and Michael Conner (427 receiving yards, 3 TDs) headline the pass catchers. On defense, LB/DL Anthony Smith has 12 sacks to bolster the rush. What Mandarin team shows up will be the bigger question. The Mustangs were at full strength for roughly seven quarters this season and were as advertised in that stretch. But they’ve had to navigate a minefield of injuries and seen their offense scaled back. They beat Fletcher 8-0 last week, a great effort by the defense and a concerning one for their offense. RBs Deion Winstead (631 rushing yards, 4 TDs) and Shaunqueze Foster (563 rushing yards, 4 TDs) have been consistent performers. WR Brysen Wright (441 receiving yards, 6 TDs) is a highlight reel. LBs Kemari Spriggs (73 tackles, 5 TFL) and Kameron Mills (52 tackles, 20.5 TFL, 11.5 sacks) and reigning All-News4JAX defensive player of the year Drake Stubbs (31 tackles, 2 INT) headline a defense that is the strength of the team now.

Riverside (5-4) at White (5-3), Varsity 4 Game of the Week, 6:30 p.m.

The District 4-4A title game and a series that has been cyclical over the last 20 years. White won seven straight from 2006-14, including an 84-0 romp in 2013. The Generals responded with four consecutive wins from 2017-2021. They’ve split the last two years. The Generals will wrap up their regular season here and will likely lock down a No. 4 seed in Region 1-4A. The Commanders are currently No. 8 in the region and would love to pull an upset and jump out of that spot and avoid a trip to No. 1 St. Augustine in the playoff opener. Riverside’s offense is a powder keg. WR Tae’shaun Gelsey has been uncoverable at times. He’s got 644 yards and 12 TDs, averaging a trip to the end zone essentially every four catches. Myles Kendrick (427 receiving yards, 2 TDs) and RB Shermon Davis (938 rushing yards, 10 TDs) are playmakers. QBs Glenn Foreman III (1,185 passing yards, 12 TDs) and Jaidan Delaune (372 passing yards, 6 TDs) are sharp under center. The Commanders are better than people think. They’d lost two games this year by a combined six points before dropping a Week 9 game to Oakleaf, 28-14. QB King Boylston (1,377 passing yards, 7 TDs), and RBs Joseph Williams (480 rushing yards, TD) and Rontrez Loyd (415 rushing yards, 4 TDs) are good out of the backfield. WRs Landon Francis and Nick Roberson have combined for nearly 1,000 yards receiving. On defense, DLs Javon Johnson and Mark Shiloh (combined 13 sacks) and DB Joshua Patterson (36 tackles, 3 INT) have led the way. This team is young and it has been good for coach Lawrence Johnson.

Next four

Baldwin (4-4) at Jackson (4-4), 6:30 p.m.: The Indians are in eighth in the Region 1-2A points standings and the Tigers are chasing five wins in what has been a solid first year under coach Bobby Ramsay.

(2) Nease (6-0) at Tocoi Creek (4-4): Panthers have been the biggest surprise story of the season and they can take another step towards their first unbeaten regular season since 2006. Toros are playing for pride and a season over .500.

Spruce Creek (5-2) at (10) Flagler Palm Coast (6-1): QB Hayden Hayes (1,769 passing yards, 19 TDs, no INT) has been elite and RB Marcus Mitchell (1,188 rushing yards, 9 TDs) is a sledgehammer. District 2-7A game is a must win for FPC.

University Christian (2-5) at Providence (7-1): The Stallions are the No. 1 seed in Region 1-1A ahead of the likes of Trinity Christian and UC. The Christians are in a transitional season and have played a tough schedule. Providence QB Mason Williams (1,666 passing yards, 21 TDs, 559 rushing yards, 12 TDs) is the real deal and healthy after a late season injury in 2023 sidelined him.
