Four to watch on Thursday

Baldwin (5-4) at White (6-3), 6:30 p.m.

This one is going to feel like a playoff game to both teams. The Commanders stunned Riverside last week to win the District 4-4A title in a 21-20 thriller. So, why does this game matter so much? Right now, White is No. 7 in Region 1-4A. That means a first-round playoff trip to Choctaw. No. 5 Arnold’s season is complete and the Commanders are well within reach of that spot. If White can win and jump to fifth that would likely mean a home playoff game against No. 4 Pine Forest. QB King Boylston (1,556 passing yards, 8 TDs), RB Joseph Williams (492 rushing yards, TD) and freshman Rontrez Loyd (474 rushing yards, 5 TDs) power the offense. WRs Nick Roberson and Landon Francis have combined for more than 1,000 yards receiving and five TDs. DB Joshua Patterson has three picks to lead the defense. Baldwin is on the cutline, in at No. 8 in the points rankings. The Indians desperately need a win. They are ahead of Bozeman by roughly 1.1 ranking points and we’ve seen margins that thin knocked out in a week. QB Gage Screws (1,610 passing yards, 19 TDs) has had an excellent season for Baldwin. RB Nashawn Jacobs (745 rushing yards, 3 TDs) and WR Kelvin Brown (774 receiving yards, 12 TDs) are the Indians big playmakers. DL Synorice Barnes (48 tackles, 19.5 TFL, 5 sacks) is a monster on the line.

(3) St. Augustine (7-1) at (6) Mandarin (7-2), 6:30 p.m.

One of the best matchups of the season. Both teams have spent time ranked No. 1 in the Super 10. The Mustangs’ identity as a fast-paced offense has changed. They still have fantastic freshman WR Brysen Wright (556 receiving yards, 8 TDs) and Jaime Ffrench (430 receiving yards, TD), but the defense has lifted the team. S Drake Stubbs (42 tackles, 2 INT, 2 FF) saved a TD against Oakleaf last week with an effort play with a forced fumble at the last possible second. DBs Tamajh Mitchell and Shareef Jackson are tough in the secondary with Stubbs. LB Kameron Mills has 52 tackles and 11.5 sacks. The offense has been the ground and pound with RBs Deion Winstead (691 rushing yards, 4 TDs) and Shaunqueze Foster (664 rushing yards, 5 TDs). The Mustangs will lean on that defense against the offensive-heavy Yellow Jackets. QB Locklan Hewlett (1,667 passing yards, 19 TDs) and Trendell Anderson (665 rushing yards, 14 TDs) supply the offense out of the backfield but the strength of St. Augustine is its ability to stretch the field with the best receiving corps in the area. Trenton Jones (516 receiving yards, 5 TDs), Carl Jenkins Jr. (500 receiving yards, 7 TDs) and Somourian Wingo (601 receiving yards, 8 TDs) are defense wreckers. In the secondary, Darrell Jenkins leads St. Augustine with five interceptions. But this game is more about the St. Augustine offense against the Mandarin defense, and it should be an excellent one.

Sandalwood (0-9) at Parker (4-5), 6:30 p.m.

While it won’t be official until the final points rankings are out, the Braves aren’t going to be able to win the district tiebreaker (via rankings points) against either Bishop Kenny or Menendez. Parker is tied with those teams in District 4-3A but it ranks 10th in the points rankings, well behind Kenny (fourth) and Menendez (sixth). A win would complete the Braves’ massive turnaround from last year’s 2-8 finish giving Parker its first non-losing season since 2021. That’s a massive momentum builder for coach Michael Holloway. Junior QB Tony Kennedy (1,467 rushing yards, 16 TDs, 1,163 passing yards, 11 TDs) warrants consideration as one of the best Braves players in recent history. On defense, S Tobi Olugbemi (34 tackles, 4 INT) leads the back end for the Braves. For Sandalwood, it’s a far different spot. The Saints have lost 19 consecutive games and have struggled even more on offense than they did last year. Sandalwood was in four one-possession games in 2023. This season, the Saints have been shut out five times and lost every game by 14 points or more.

Fletcher (5-4) at Trinity Christian (6-3)

The Conquerors are sitting with a No. 3 seed right now with the possibility of moving up to second with a win here and a loss by Tallahassee Maclay. That would be a big time achievement for a very young team. QBs Terel Dallas and Hicks Zarah have combined for 18 TD passes and seven rushing TDs. TE Lenox Hires leads the team with six TD catches. LB Kaleel Vereen leads the Trinity defense with 45 tackles. For the Senators, this is a much different scenario. They’re currently ninth in Region 1-6A and need a win to have a shot at a No. 8 seed. Fletcher needs a win here and a loss by Orlando Evans (to Oak Ridge) for a rankings boost. Otherwise, it will miss the playoffs for the first time since 2019. QB Cruz James Bajek (1,279 passing yards, 14 TDs), RB Jahmyri Jennings (491 rushing yards, 9 TDs) and WR Solomon Pinkney (405 receiving yards, 6 TDs) lead Fletcher on offense. DL Andre Jackson (57 tackles, 10 sacks, 9 TFL) is tops on the Fletcher pass rush.

Two more to watch

Atlantic Coast (3-6) at (1) Raines (8-0), 6:30 p.m.: On paper, this should be an easy one for the Vikings. But the Stingrays made this a game last year (29-22 Raines win). And with the Vikings chasing their first unbeaten regular season since 1997, they’ve got a lot to play for.

Jackson (4-5) at First Coast (3-6), 6:30 p.m.: Neither program is going to the playoffs but it’s a good one for a couple reasons. Bobby Ramsay has done an excellent job in his first season with the Tigers and could get them to .500. They really could be 6-3 right now. And the Buccaneers would like to get longtime head coach Marty Lee a win as his longtime coaching career winds down either this year or in the coming seasons.
