Four to watch on Friday

Creekside (5-4) at (7) Ponte Vedra (7-2), Varsity 4 Game of the Week

Unlike last year when these teams met, playoff spots are sewn up for both teams. The Knights reached the playoffs last year after a late season surge pushed them into the postseason top eight. Creekside won the first district championship in program history this year while the Sharks are seeded a comfortable fourth in Region 1-5A. A win by Ponte Vedra (and a loss by Tallahassee Lincoln to Rickards) could give the Sharks enough to climb to a 3 seed. But it’s more realistic that they stay where they are. Creekside is ranked No. 5 in Region 1-7A and would host Flagler Palm Coast if the playoffs began today. A loss could send them tumbling down and likely into a road playoff game in the opener. Creekside has a powerful offense, with QB Sean Ashenfelder (486 rushing yards, 13 TDs; 1,522 passing yards, 10 TDs) and RB Harrison Garrido (1,066 rushing yards, 12 TDs) leading the way. For the Sharks, QB Drew Price (1,294 passing yards, 11 TDs) and RB Brian Case (1,116 rushing yards, 15 TDs) lead the offense. On defense, DLs Martin Geary (35 tackles, 10 TFL, 6 sacks), Ryker Kemp (30 tackles, 9 sacks) and Reece Beck (15 sacks, 8 sacks, 4 TFL) are tough. The Sharks lead the all-time series 10-7, including a pair of wins in the playoffs.

Matanzas (4-5) at Flagler Palm Coast (7-1)

The annual Potato Bowl has been dominated by the Bulldogs, who lead the series 12-3 in the recordbooks (but 13-2 on the field after a forfeit in 2023). FPC still has an outside shot at the District 2-7A title but it would require some help from Spruce Creek (to upset University). The likely scenario is a win and staying put at No. 4 in Region 1-7A. QB Hayden Hayes (2,131 passing yards, 25 TDs) has yet to throw an interception. WRs Mikhail Zysek (686 receiving yards, 11 TDs) and Braylyn Simmons (636 receiving yards, 7 TDs) are his favorite targets. RB Marcus Mitchell (1,303 rushing yards, 9 TDs) is over 4,000 career rushing yards. For the Pirates, RBs Wiley Conner (371 rushing yards, 3 TDs) and Caden Burchfield (332 rushing yards, 3 TDs) power the offense and DL Omar Steward (5.5 sacks) and DB Cooper May (68 tackles) lead the defense. The playoffs are out of reach for Matanzas, but a .500 record and win over its biggest rival would be substantial to enter the offseason with.

(2) Nease (7-0) at Beachside (7-2)

One of two games left for the Panthers, who are in search of their first perfect regular season since 2006, a year that ended with a tough loss to Tampa Plant in the state championship game. Nease tops the FHSAA points rankings chart and has been on another level from the start. QB Nate Harry (1,415 passing yards, 18 TDs; 302 rushing yards, 3 TDs) has a claim as the area’s top offensive player and he’s got two big targets in Maddox Spencer (519 receiving yards, 7 TDs) and Vernon Stephens (316 receiving yards, 6 TDs). The defense plays like every snap is the last one. LB Joe Miracle III (51 tackles, 14 TFL, 2 INT, 6.5 sacks) is a playmaker all over. DBs Elisha Luckett has five picks and Shemar McNair had both of his picks against Buchholz and clinched the OT win. The Barracudas are likely playoff bound for the first time but this is a tough assignment. QB Eddie Jordan (2,395 passing yards, 24 TDs) can put the ball all over the field with a firecracker release. WRs Drew Watson (815 receiving yards, 8 TDs) and Maddox Hunstead (629 receiving yards. 10 TDs) are Jordan’s big targets but four other players have caught TDs. DL Noah Lustrea anchors the line with 6.5 sacks. The Barracudas are ranked fifth in Region 1-5A but would likely jump to fourth and possibly even third with an upset of Nease.

Providence (7-2) at Bishop Kenny (6-3)

A big game for both teams. The Crusaders are ranked fourth in Region 1-3A but not by much. A win here likely sews up the District 4-3A title by rankings points over Menendez. But … a loss by the Crusaders and a win by Menendez over Yulee could flip that. Right now, Kenny would host Baker County in the first round but a loss shakes things up big time. Kenny isn’t in danger of missing the playoffs with a loss but a higher seed would mean avoiding Raines for as long as possible in the region round. QB Derek Heideman (1,123 passing yards, 13 TDs), RB Caleb Mattison (950 rushing yards, 14 TDs) and WR JP Donovan (486 receiving yards, 7 TDs) lead the Crusaders offense. Providence is safe from a playoff standing. The Stallions are No. 1 in Region 1-1A but are coming off a loss to University Christian for the district championship. Could another loss knock them out of the top spot? QB Mason Williams (1,925 passing yards, 24 TDs; 559 rushing yards, 12 TDs) is a monster. RB Jaxon Harshman (632 rushing yards, 3 TDs) and WR Noah Johnson (874 receiving yards, 9 TDs) lead Providence. On defense, DE Sam Hayward (50 tackles, 18 TFL, 89 sacks) us one of the area’s best.

Next four to watch

Fernandina Beach (4-6) at West Nassau (9-1): One of the best seasons ever for the Warriors as powerful RBs Skyler Freeman (732 rushing yards, 14 TDs), Avery Griffin (448 rushing yards, 4 TDs), Andi Ataiza (414 rushing yards, 9 TDs) and Smo Green (392 rushing yards, 9 TDs) do they heavy lifting. They’re in the biggest bracket of the Sunshine State Athletic Association’s Atlantic State championship and could play for a title. But it won’t be easy. They face the rival Pirates for the second time in the last four weeks.

Middleburg (6-3) at North Marion (4-5): The Broncos started 6-0 and have dropped their last three as the competition ramped up. They’re in the No. 8 position in Region 1-5A and have played the weakest schedule in the region by a considerable margin. A loss here and a Chiles win over Suwannee could make things interesting come selection time. The Broncos are safely in with a victory and a win would be the best regular season finish for the program since 7-3 in 2003. That would be quite the feat for head coach Ryan Wolfe. The Broncos were 0-10 as recently as 2020, the year before Wolfe was hired.

Union County (8-0) at Chiefland (7-1), 7:30 p.m.: A massive collision between Rural title contenders. The Tigers are ranked No. 1 in the Rural standings and the Indians are fifth. RB Drew Simmons (1,135 rushing yards, 13 TDs) and QB Trenton Klein (971 passing yards, 16 TDs) power Union.

Yulee (2-6) at Menendez (5-4): The Falcons are sixth in Region 1-3A and should get in the playoffs, win or lose. But Menendez has an outside shot at the District 4-3A title, but it needs a win and a loss by Bishop Kenny to bolster that possibility.
