High school football playoffs ‘24: Bolles, Raines, St. Aug storm into 3rd round

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Eight local teams in Florida and one in Georgia are still standing in the high school football state playoffs.

Oakleaf, St. Augustine, Raines and Bolles all rolled to big wins to headline Friday night’s second round of the postseason. It was much closer for Bishop Kenny, Trinity Christian, University Christian and Union County. And for Pierce County, the Bears are still in the hunt to defend their Class 2A state playoffs in the Georgia High School Association playoffs.

St. Augustine used three Trenton Jones touchdowns in the first half and rolled over White in Region 1-4A for a 38-14 win. The Yellow Jackets (10-1) will host Choctawhatchee in next week’s regional final. It’s a rematch of last year’s third-round game, won by the Yellow Jackets.

Raines (11-0) obliterated visiting Wakulla 63-7, atoning for playoff losses in recent years to the War Eagles. The Super 6 No. 1 Vikings scored all 63 points in the opening half, getting five touchdown passes from Timothy Cole in the romp. Raines will host Bishop Kenny in next week’s regional final.

The Crusaders came back to knock Tallahassee Godby from the playoffs with a 36-26 win. Kenny got five touchdown passes from Derek Heideman and scored the final 15 points of the game to top the Cougars. Kenny had lost twice to Godby in the postseason (2012, 2014) to end two of its best runs in program history.

Bolles crushed visiting Walton 35-0 in Region 1-2A, winning its 10th consecutive game and storming into a regional final at Gadsden County next week.

University Christian and Trinity Christian set up a regional final date in 1-1A with wins on Friday night. The Christians erased a two-touchdown deficit early to surge back and beat host Providence 24-21 for the second time this season. Josh Bruton had three touchdowns for UC, upping his season total against the Stallions to nine. Trinity pulled away from visiting Maclay and won 28-21.

The season’s of Ponte Vedra and Fleming Island came to tough finishes. The Sharks took host Niceville into overtime in Region 1-5A but saw Drew Price’s pass on a two-point conversion fall incomplete in a 21-20 loss. Price had a touchdown pass to Davitt Doherty and Brian Case had a touchdown run in regulation.

In that same region, Fleming Island battled back from a 16-0 deficit but couldn’t complete the comeback in a 16-13 loss to Tallahassee Lincoln.

In Region 2-2A, Bradford’s season came to an end with a 34-19 loss to Newberry. The Tornadoes (9-2) only lost twice this year but both came to the Panthers.

In the Rural class, host Union County pulled away from Pahokee for a 28-18 win. The Tigers (10-1) visit powerhouse Madison County in the third round next week. Fort White’s season came to an end with a 28-19 loss to Williston.

In the Georgia playoffs, reigning Class 5A state champ Coffee ended Brunswick’s season with a 45-14 romp. In 4A, unbeaten North Oconee hammered Ware County 35-6. In 2A, reigning state champ Pierce County went on the road and beat Columbia 31-24. Caden McGatha rushed for four touchdowns for the Bears (11-1). Pierce heads to Carver (11-1) for the state quarterfinals next.
