St. Augustine (11-2) finished as the Class 3S state runner-up a season ago to Daytona Beach Mainland but couldn’t slow down private school power Heritage.

Receiver-turned quarterback Miami signee Malachi Toney had four touchdowns in the opening half (three passing, one rushing) to help the Patriots open a 19-point lead at half.

St. Augustine made a game of it in the second half.

Locklan Hewlett hit Somourian Wingo on a crisp pass over the middle that the junior wideout stretched into an 83-yard touchdown to get within 28-16. On the ensuing drive, Darrell Jenkins picked off Toney and Hewlett tossed a 17-yard touchdown pass to Carl Jenkins Jr. to get within 28-22. But Heritage hit a field goal and then had an 80-yard pick-six from Zae Thomas to go in front 38-22. Hewlett hit Trenton Jones on a touchdown with just a couple seconds left for the final margin.

In 1A, Trinity Christian’s young team got just one touchdown on a run in the final minutes by Terel Dallas in a loss to the powerful Lions. Chaminade-Madonna has reached nine consecutive state championship games, with its lone loss coming to Trinity Christian in 2020. The Lions have won 15 of their last 16 playoff games by running clocks. The Conquerors finished their season at 10-4.
