Varsity 4 Super 6 boys basketball rankings
Rank, previous, school, record, classification
1. (NR) Fleming Island (8-1, Class 5A)
Quality wins: Bradford, Creekside, Jackson, Orange Park, Riverside.
Notable: The Golden Eagles had been knocking on the door of the Super 6 but kicked it down with a romp through the Fortegra, beating Riverside (74-47), Creekside (66-53) and previous No. 1 Jackson (55-54) to win it. Fleming won the Fortegra in the 2021 season but had to later forfeit it for an ineligible player. They’re hosting their pre-Christmas Battle on the Island this week. Sophomore wing Carson Crawford has picked up where he left off from a special freshman season. He’s averaging 21 ppg and 9.8 rpg.
2. (1) Jackson (8-1, Class 3A)
Quality wins: Bolles, Creekside, Impact Christian, Tocoi Creek, University Christian.
Notable: The Tigers had a solid Fortega tournament, with quality Ws over Tocoi Creek (52-44) and University Christian (63-56) before a loss in the final to Fleming Island (55-54). They’re back in action quick at Fleming’s Battle on the Island, with a 6-1 Gainesville up first on Thursday. Jahari Simmons (15.6 ppg) and David Wilson (13.6 ppg) are leading the Tigers.
3. (6) Impact Christian (5-2, Class 1A)
Quality wins: Creekside, Episcopal, Ponte Vedra, Potter’s House, San Jose Prep.
Notable: Just one game since our last Super 6 and it was a huge one for the Lions, a 64-61 win over previous No. 4 Ponte Vedra. They’ve got Baldwin Ga. and Oviedo up on Friday and Saturday. Ronald Clark (17.3 ppg) and Jeremiah Jones (16.3 ppg) are leading the Lions.
4. (5) Tocoi Creek (10-1, Class 6A)
Quality wins: Beachside, Bishop Kenny, Fleming Island, Raines, Riverside.
Notable: The Toros went 2-1 at the Fortegra, losing to Jackson (52-44) and beating Riverside (58-39) and Nease (51-40). They also beat a quality Beachside team (42-39) this week. Sandalwood is next up on Thursday before the Christmas break.
5. (3) Providence (7-3, Class 2A)
Quality wins: Bolles, Eagle’s View, Fernandina Beach, Ponte Vedra.
Notable: The Stallions went 1-1 since our last Super 6, beating Fernandina Beach (60-52) and losing to a solid St. Augustine (48-40). Providence is another team I struggled to keep in the rankings this week. Ryan Gornto is leading the Stallions at 13 ppg followed by William Stewart and Colton Nuualiitia at 11.5 ppg apiece.
6. (NR) Mandarin (8-0, Class 6A)
Quality wins: Fletcher, Ribault.
Notable: The Mustangs knocked off previous No. 2 Ribault (68-67) to throw an exclamation point on its unbeaten start. I did have some hesitation on moving Mandarin ahead of Oakleaf and St. Augustine because the schedule has been paper thin, but they’re going to get tested in the Battle on the Island tournament this week.
