Varsity 4 Super 6 softball: Atlantic Coast back up to No. 1, Matanzas moves into rankings

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Varsity 4 News4JAX Super 6 softball rankings presented by the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp will be published each Thursday in the regular season. Records are through April 9 games.

Rank, previous, school, record, classification

1. (2) Atlantic Coast (18-2, Class 7A)

Quality wins: Baldwin, Bishop Kenny, Creekside, Episcopal, Fleming Island, Fletcher (twice), Paxon.

Notable: The Stingrays are barreling through the Gateway Conference tournament, and they are back at No. 1 after dropping a spot last week. They’ve beaten Sandalwood and Fletcher in the tourney. Skye Deans (.432), Stella Lynton (.403), Emma Cano (.379), Morgan Brown (.364) and Maggie Moody (.355) are leading the way for the Stingrays.

2. (1) Baker County (13-3-1, Class 4A)

Quality wins: Baldwin, Columbia, Fort White, Hilliard, Keystone Heights (twice), Middleburg, Oakleaf, Paxon, West Nassau.

Notable: The Wildcats moved up to No. 1 last week after a great stretch that included wins over Super 6 teams Baldwin, Paxon and Middleburg. They dropped their lone game since our last rankings with a 7-3 loss to a very good Fort White.

3. (2) Baldwin (13-4, Class 2A)

Quality wins: Baker County, Bartram Trail, Columbia, Mandarin, Paxon (twice), Trinity Catholic.

Notable: The Indians went 2-0 since our last Super 6, beating Wolfson and Paxon in the Gateway Conference tournament. They’re on a collision course with No. 1 Atlantic Coast for the conference crown. Kendall North (.529, 14 RBI, 2 HR), Makaila Fry (.452, 22 RBI), Raven Watson (.418, 11 RBI) and Jazmine Ramos-Merced (.367, 5 HR, 24 RBI) are leading the way.

4. (4) Fort White (13-5, Rural)

Quality wins: Branford, Columbia, Santa Fe, Trenton, Williston (twice).

Notable: This Indians went 2-1 since our last Super 6, losing to Suwannee (2-1), but beating a quality Williston (1-0) and previous Super 6 No. 1-ranked Baker County (7-3). That’s a quality stretch for the smallest team in the rankings. Senior Kadence Compton (.417, 3 HR) leads at the plate and in the circle (10-4, 97.2 IP, 132 Ks, 0.72 ERA).

5. (NR) Matanzas (16-1, Class 5A)

Quality wins: DeLand, Spruce Creek, St. Cloud, Taylor Pierson, Orange City University (twice), West Nassau.

Notable: The Pirates make their Super 6 debut after stretching their winning streak to eight games. They’ve got some high-quality Ws this season, too. The lone loss was to a solid Palatka. They wrap up the regular season against Atlantic Coast, Beachside and Palatka. Gators signee Leah Stevens is dealing (10-0, 134 Ks in 59.2 IP, 0.42 ERA).

6. (6) Middleburg (12-6, Class 5A)

Quality wins: Baldwin, Cornerstone Charter, Episcopal, Keystone Heights, Mandarin, Oakleaf, Trinity Catholic, West Nassau, Yulee.

Notable: The Broncos went 2-1 since our last Super 6, losing to a 13-3 Wakulla (4-1), then beating Mandarin (12-1) and Nease (4-3 in 9 innings). Kerra Clarida (.431, 2 HR), Mika Wesley (.412) and Emma Ward (.400) are leading Middleburg at the plate. They edge out Episcopal for the No. 6 spot
