WJXT news sweeps May 2014 ratings

Jacksonville viewers make Channel 4 dominant in morning, evening, late news

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – WJXT TV-4 is again No. 1 in news for the May 2014 Nielsen ratings period in the Jacksonville television market, winning in every local news time period for the month.

Outside of news, WJXT beat the NBC, ABC and Fox networks, making The Local Station the second-most-watched station in prime time with local favorites Everybody Loves Raymond, Rules of Engagement and Big Bang Theory, with Channel 4 behind only CBS network programming.

In morning news, Channel 4 is No. 1 at 5 a.m. with a 3.7 household rating, beating the combined 2.3 household ratings of WTLV/WJXX. At 5:30 a.m., Channel 4 drew a 5.3 household rating, more than all of the combined news competition in the market.

Channel 4 is also No. 1 in the 6-7 a.m. time period, garnering a 7.1 household rating and a 22 share (compared to WTLV/WJXX 4.7 rating/15 share, WAWS 1.8 rating/6 share and WTEV 1.2 rating/4 share). WJXT's The Morning Show (7-9 a.m.), anchored by Jennifer Waugh, Bruce Hamilton and Richard Nunn, is No. 1 in the time period with a 6.4 rating and a 19 share, beating out all other newscasts including the national broadcasts of NBC's Today Show on WTLV (3.6 rating/11 share), CBS This Morning on WTEV (1.6 rating/5 share) and ABC's Good Morning America on WJXX (1.5 rating/4 share). This marks the 35th consecutive month that Channel 4 has won the 7 a.m.-9 a.m. time period.

In evening news, Channel 4 News at 5 p.m. earned a 6.3 household rating and a 13 share (compared to WTLV/WJXX 3.5 rating/7 share and WTEV 3.9 rating/8 share, growing 5 percent over May 2013. Channel 4 News at 5:30 p.m. is up even more with a 13 percent increase over the previous year, and is No. 1 in the time period with a 7.1 household rating and a 14 share (compared to WTLV/WJXX 4.5 rating/9 share and WTEV 4.2 rating/8 share). Channel 4 News at 6 p.m. anchored by Mary Baer, Tom Wills, John Gaughan and Sam Kouvaris is No. 1 with an 8.4 household rating and a 16 share (compared to WTLV/WJXX 7.3 rating/13 share and WTEV 4.6 rating/9 share), with growth of 15 percent over the May 2013 numbers.

The story continued in late news, with wins in The Ten O'Clock News and 11 p.m. At 10 p.m., WJXT now has the top-rated newscast, its rating beat all network prime-time programming -- up 11 percent over last year.

At 11 p.m., Channel 4 draws a 5.4 household rating and 11 share compared to WTLV/WJXX's 4.0 rating/8 share and WTEV's 4.4 rating/9 share.

WJXT also had many of the most-watched shows during non-news programming. Dr. Oz won both the 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. time periods, and the station saw double- and triple-digit year-to-year growth throughout daytime programming. Another area of significant year-to-year growth is in prime time, with Everybody Loves Raymond up 46 percent, Rules of Engagement up 42 percent and The Big Bang Theory up 21 percent over May 2013.

In late night, Arsenio Hall takes over as Jacksonville's No. 1 program, beating out Jimmy Fallon on NBC, David Letterman on CBS and Jimmy Kimmel on ABC.
