Mexico’s attorney general has reported irregularities in an investigation by state authorities into an alleged cartel killing site and training camp at a ranch in the western state of Jalisco where people searching for relatives found hundreds of articles of clothing and other personal effects.

Mexico has sent infamous drug lord Rafael Caro Quintero to the United States along with 28 other prisoners requested by the U.S. government.

Prosecutors in Mexico say they have arrested a former attorney general and issued warrants for 83 army soldiers and officers, police and gang members in the 2014 disappearance of 43 students.

Democrats in Congress are sounding the alarm over what they claim is mounting evidence that Mexico’s chief prosecutor is assailing the nation’s independent judiciary and selectively targeting for prosecution opponents of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

The warrants are based on forced disappearance and organized crime charges, Gertz Manero said. Gertz Manero said the new charges were never investigated or brought by prosecutors at the time. Gertz Manero said Tuesday that there is still an international search underway for Toms Zern, the cases chief investigator as head of the Criminal Investigation Agency. An arrest warrant was obtained for Zern in March, but he fled the country, Gertz Manero said. More charges against other officials are expected later this week, Gertz Manero said.
