Hours after the hearing, Trump took to Twitter to chastise his FBI director for his statements on antifa and on Russian election interference, two themes that dominated a congressional hearing on threats to the American homeland. Trump tweeted that the U.S. would be designating antifa as a terrorist organization, even though such designations are historically reserved for foreign groups and antifa lacks the hierarchical structure of formal organizations. The FBI director said racially motivated violent extremists, such as white supremacists, have been responsible for the most lethal attacks in the U.S. in recent years. He responded on that front Thursday evening, tweeting: โBut Chris, you donโt see any activity from China, even though it is a FAR greater threat than Russia, Russia, Russia.

"Major consideration is being given to naming ANTIFA an 'ORGANIZATION OF TERROR,'" the President wrote in a tweet. Trump's tweet came after days of Portland authorities condemning hate and warning residents to stay home as far-right groups planned a rally aimed at putting an "end to domestic terrorism," with a particular focus on Antifa extremist groups. There were fears the rally would attract both a smattering of right-wing extremists and Antifa counterdemonstrators, in turn prompting violent clashes like those the city has repeatedly seen in recent years. The Oath Keepers, an anti-government group associated with the militia movement, said in a statement on its website it would not attend the event as a group but would continue to oppose Antifa.
