Bethune-Cookman is headed back to the gridiron in Jacksonville this fall. The Wildcats will host Southern University at EverBank Stadium on Oct. 21 at 4 p.m., the school and city announced on Thursday.

Pro Football hall of Famer Ed Reed has been hired as the new football coach at Bethune Cookman.

It’s been a long and challenging road for Bethune-Cookman’s football team. Since Hurricane Ian approached, the team has found a temporary home in four different cities. Now, they’ll finally be able to return to Daytona Beach, albeit, after a difficult loss to Jackson State, 48-6 on Saturday at TIAA Bank Field.

For the first time in 16 years, Bethune-Cookman will play a football game in Jacksonville. Saturday's game will be the end of an extended road trip for the Wildcats.

TIAA Bank Field will serve as host to a big matchup in HBCU football. Bethune-Cookman will meet Deion Sanders’ Jackson State program on Oct. 15.

The Latest on the effects of the coronavirus outbreak on sports around the world:___California’s men’s basketball team is pausing workouts after an unidentified player tested positive for COVID-19. ___The NFL and its players' union say eight players and 11 other personnel tested positive in the latest round of screening for COVID-19. Coach Dan Mullen, at least two assistants and more than two dozen players tested positive following a road trip to Texas A&M earlier this month. FIU has seen more than 30 players miss time this season because of positive coronavirus tests or a need to quarantine after potential exposure. Last Sunday’s game between Lens and Nantes was postponed after 11 Lens players and two staff members tested positive for COVID-19.

The Mid-American Athletic Conference has suspended fall sports, becoming the third Division I league to postpone its football season. Following fellow FCS conferences the Ivy League and Patriot League, the MEAC announced it would not have competition in the fall and consider trying to make up the schedule for those sports in the 2021 spring semester. The MEAC is comprised of 11 historically black colleges, though its membership is in flux. Earlier this year, Florida A&M and Bethune-Cookman announced they would be leaving the MEAC and joining the Southwestern Athletic Conference next year. The MEAC had more than two dozen players with area ties on the rosters of its programs last season.

Bethune-Cookman knocks off Florida A&M againThe 40th annual Florida Classic was indeed a classic on Saturday, as an announced crowd of more than 55,000 fans saw Bethune-Cookman continue its dominance of Florida A&M. It was the highest-attended Florida Classic game since 2011. The Wildcats earned a 31-27 win over Florida A&M, the ninth straight win for Bethune-Cookman in the series. Florida ended a five-year losing streak to Florida State last year with a 41-14 win in Tallahassee. Apopka (11-1) will host Lutz Steinbrenner in a semifinal on Friday, while Seminole (11-1) suffered its only loss of the season.
