JOHN'S, Antigua - Jerry strengthened to a Category 2 hurricane Friday and was packing sustained winds of 105 mph in the Atlantic as it headed in the direction of the northern Leeward Islands, forecasters said. The storm will pass north of the islands later Friday and well north of Puerto Rico Saturday, the National Hurricane Center said. "Although the core of Jerry is expected to move north of the northern Leeward Islands, heavy rainfall and flash floods are possible there today," the center said. The northern Leeward Islands will also see swells that are likely to cause "life-threatening surf and rip current conditions," according to the center.

With wind speeds of 100 mph -- and gusts up to 120 mph -- the Category 2 storm could still become a major hurricane before it comes dangerously close Wednesday night to Bermuda. The hurricane will pass less than 100 miles north of the island territory, according to the current forecast track from the National Hurricane Center, which noted Tuesday at 11 a.m. A tropical storm warning and a hurricane watch have been issued by the Bermuda Weather Service. According to the National Hurricane Center, a Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for all coastal areas in Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia. Once a Category 5 hurricane, Dorian has weakened to a Category 2 as sustained winds fell to 105 miles per hour. Northeast Florida is currently seeing steady rain along coastal spots from St. Johns County up to Glynn County. As of 2 p.m. the center of Hurricane Dorian is off the coast of Jacksonville Beach. The storm will remain a Category 2 as it moves away from Northeast Florida between 8 p.m. and 11 p.m.
