The storm will pass north of the islands later Friday and well north of Puerto Rico Saturday, the National Hurricane Center said. "Although the core of Jerry is expected to move north of the northern Leeward Islands, heavy rainfall and flash floods are possible there today," the center said. The northern Leeward Islands will also see swells that are likely to cause "life-threatening surf and rip current conditions," according to the center.

With wind speeds of 100 mph -- and gusts up to 120 mph -- the Category 2 storm could still become a major hurricane before it comes dangerously close Wednesday night to Bermuda. The hurricane will pass less than 100 miles north of the island territory, according to the current forecast track from the National Hurricane Center, which noted Tuesday at 11 a.m. A tropical storm warning and a hurricane watch have been issued by the Bermuda Weather Service.
