Hundreds of people are lining up to pay respects before the funeral of a nursing student found slain on the University of Georgia campus.

In the year since a gunman killed eight people at three Georgia massage businesses, the family members and friends of the victims have been struggling with grief, trying to heal and making sure their loved ones aren’t forgotten.

Seven of the victims were women — six of Asian descent — and the gunman targeted the massage businesses despite a strip club and lingerie stores nearby. Police records released by the city Friday show 10 people were arrested at the two Atlanta massage businesses on prostitution charges, but none since 2013. Four people were killed and a fifth wounded at Youngs Asian Massage near Woodstock, in Atlanta’s northwestern suburbs. It was updated on March 20, 2021 to correct that there were 10 prostitution-related arrests at the two Atlanta businesses, and police were called to them repeatedly.

But those statements spurred outrage and widespread skepticism given the locations and that six of the eight victims were women of Asian descent. AdThe attacks began when five people were shot at Youngs Asian Massage Parlor near Woodstock, about 30 miles (50 kilometers) north of Atlanta, authorities said.

A 21-year-old man suspected in the shootings was taken into custody in southwest Georgia hours later after a manhunt, police said. Atlanta and Cherokee County authorities were working to confirm the cases are related. FBI spokesman Kevin Rowson said the agency was assisting Atlanta and Cherokee County authorities in the investigation. Long was then taken into custody “without incident” and was being held in the Crisp County jail for Cherokee County authorities who were expected to arrive soon to continue their investigation. Due to the shootings, Atlanta police said they dispatched officers to check nearby similar businesses and increased patrols in the area.

Meanwhile, Georgia’s largest school district struggled to launch online learning for its 180,000 students, as parents complained that their students repeatedly tried and failed to log into Gwinnett County’s online system. Cherokee County is the largest school district in Georgia that’s currently offering face-to-face classes. The district announced it would close Woodstock High School until Aug. 31, a day after it made the same announcement at Etowah High School. Total deaths rose to nearly 4,500 on Wednesday, with 67 deaths a day reported to the state on average in the past week. The total number of cases rose past 225,000, as close to 3,500 cases a day continue to be confirmed.
