It’s been one year since Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office Lieutenant Chris Cunningham died from COVID-19 while on the job. At the time, vaccines were not available.

Since the coronavirus pandemic began, 18 Florida law enforcement officers that we know of contracted the virus on the job and died in the line of duty. Another 22 police, deputy sheriff’s or corrections officers have died in Georgia, according to the Officer Down Memorial Page website. Northeast Florida has already lost two law enforcement members to COVID-19 complications. Eric Twisdale, both 48, were both treated as line of duty deaths because it’s believed they contracted the virus while working. It brings together hundreds of law enforcement motorcycle enthusiasts and supporters from around the country to pay tribute to America’s fallen heroes and raise awareness of line of duty deaths nationally.

The lieutenant, who spent 20 years at the Sheriffs Office, leaves behind a wife, five children and three grandchildren.
