FLEMING ISLAND, Fla. – A man died after driving into a retention pond in Fleming Island early Sunday morning, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. Troopers said they were called around 3:20 a.m. to the accident in Neptune Park off Thunderbolt Road. According to FHP, a 34-year-old Orange Park man was driving a sedan west on Thunderbolt Road when the car went into the pond. A tow truck has removed a silver 4-door Nissan Altima from the retention pond in Fleming Island. Multiple neighbors told News4Jax they often hear cars racing on Thunderbolt Road leading into the park where the pond is located.

GREEN COVE SPRINGS, Fla. The Clay County Sheriffs Office acknowledged for the first time Friday that there are cases of coronavirus in the county jail. According to the release, 18 inmates that have tested positive for the COVID-19 virus are isolated and their symptoms are treated accordingly. The Sheriffs Office said there are no inmates at this time in need of advanced medical treatment. The Sheriffs Office said those measures have been in place for several months. Weve implemented safety measures in every aspect of our operations at the Clay County Sheriffs Office, and while it has changed how we operate, we are still committed to keeping our employees and those who are in our custody and control as safe as possible.The Clay County Jail currently 462 inmates in the jail, according to Shassberger.

DeSantis suspends Clay County Sheriff Darryl DanielsGov. Under his suspension, Daniels is prohibited from performing any official duty or function of public office. He’s also prohibited from receiving any pay or allowance from any privileges of public office. The Clay County Sheriff’s Office told News4Jax, “The video was removed at the discretion of the Sheriff’s Administration.”Several other videos of Daniels have not been removed.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Clay County Sheriff’s Office found a 38-year-old man after posting on social media that he was missing. They said he was last seen near the 600 block of Robert Livingston Street in Orange Park. The CCSO also advised people not to make contact with him if he was spotted and to alert authorities instead. Within an hour of that announcement, CCSO posted to its Twitter account that it had found the man. Editor’s Note: Because the man is no longer missing, News4Jax has removed his name and photo from this article.

CLAY COUNTY, Fla. Sheriff Darryl Daniels presented his proposed budget for the Clay County Sheriffs Office in 2021 to the Board of County Commissioners on Friday night. His proposal calls for $69.7 million dollars -- an increase of $1.5 million from the prior year. The $68.2 million in the 2020 budget was an increase of $10.2 million from 2019. He said $14 million would go toward detention, $2 million would go toward judicial, $3.6 million would go toward building maintenance, and just shy of $2 million would go toward special revenue. Starting salary for Clay County deputies is $38,000.

GREEN COVE SPRINGS, Fla. Two members of the Clay County Sheriffs Office and one inmate at the county jail have tested positive for COVID-19, according to a news release Tuesday from a department spokesperson. Laura Shassberger, the Sheriffs Office public information officer, said in a new release that both members of the department work in the same building. The inmate at the Clay County Jail who tested positive for the virus was said to be asymptomatic, and the inmate was isolated. Employees of the detention facility who might have had direct contact were notified and are being tested, the news release said. The Sheriffs Office said its working with the health department to increase inmate testing at the jail.

The Clay County Sheriffs Office on Thursday will be holding an event called Talking for a Change.The Sheriffs Office is inviting the community to help come up with ideas to bridge the gap with law enforcement. Through organized discussion, we hope together we can find solutions we, as an agency, can present at the next National Sheriffs Association conference, the Sheriffs Office said in a Facebook post. News4Jax anchor Kent Justice will moderate Thursdays event, which will take place from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Cedar Point Baptist Church at 1650 Blanding Boulevard in Middleburg. Everyone is welcome to attend, but you are encouraged to register ahead of time by contacting Tina Hodges at thodges@claysheriff.com or at 904-529-6160. They said the man and woman are considered persons of interest. The Sheriffs Office would not give specifics about the investigation, and deputies urged caution if you see the man and woman. CLAY COUNTY, Fla. – The Clay County Sheriff’s Office said Tuesday night it had received reports of bear activity on multiple properties in the area of Moccasin Slough Park near Raggedy Point Road in Fleming Island. Deputies asked residents to secure trash cans and anything else that could attract a bear. Deputies added that residents should not approach or attempt to feed the bear. According to the Sheriff’s Office, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission will be responding.

CLAY COUNTY, Fla. - A 74-year-old Orange Park man is charged with sexual battery on a child under the age of 12. Donald Gambill was arrested Thursday afternoon at the Clay County Sheriffs Office substation in Orange Park after he agreed to meet with detectives to discuss allegations of sexual abuse. According to an arrest report, which was heavily edited to omit certain parts, the abuse happened more than one time between 2011 and 2013. A detective noted in the report that the victims statements were consistent with statements from a witness. As of Friday afternoon, Gambill remained in the Clay County jail without bond, online jail records show.

ORANGE PARK, Fla. - The mother of a man found dead in Orange Park said that her son was murdered, despite investigators originally saying it was a hit-and-run. Dorrien Mann, 26, was found dead on Cappella Road in Orange Park on the morning of Oct. 17. The Clay County Sheriffs Office and Florida Highway Patrol said it was a hit-and-run, but Mann's mother, Helen Williams said the autopsy report says otherwise. Though this is an ongoing investigation, Manns mother said she could no longer stay silent about the gunshot detail. Anyone with information about Mann's death is asked to call the Clay County Sheriff's Office at (904) 264-6512.
