The St. Johns County community is experiencing rapid growth and county leaders are working to keep up with the projected increase.

The Florida Highway Patrol reported that a 38-year-old Jacksonville man died and his 39-year-old passenger was injured Saturday afternoon in a rollover crash on Interstate 95 southbound just south of County Road 210 in St. Johns County. Troopers said the driver was changing lanes near Mile Marker 328 about 4 p.m. when he lost control of his pickup truck and struck the median. For hours, the vehicle could be seen lying on its roof on the highway. blocking all southbound lanes. The scene was cleared and the interstate fully reopened about four hours after the crash.

ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. – A semitruck driver was shot Monday while traveling on Interstate 95 near a St. Johns County rest stop, according to the Sheriff’s Office. Four vehicles were in the center lane at the time, traveling behind each other. The first oncoming vehicle hit the right, rear tire of the tractor-trailer and a chain reaction crash ensued. The first oncoming vehicle, driven by a 26-year-old with a 75-year-old passenger, was deflected on impact with the tractor-trailer and was rear-ended by a van following directly behind. A fourth and final vehicle, driven by a 27-year-od, was following behind and hit the SUV, spinning the SUV clockwise so that it was facing north.

ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. Plans for a new St. Johns County high school set to be built off County Road 210 received final approval from the school board Tuesday morning. High School III will serve students in fast-growing northeast St. Johns County and will be located off Beachwalk Boulevard within the Twin Creeks development. After the first five days of the new school year, the district estimates there has been a 5% growth in high school enrollment in the county with a 7.3% growth at Bartram Trail High School and 7.8% growth at Nease High School. We definitely still need another high school, even given high school HHH is on its way to being fully constructed.The district plans to open High School HHH, located near World Golf Village, for the 2021-2022 school year and High School III will open one year later for the 2022-2023 school year. School board member Tommy Allen was the only board member present to vote against the plans, citing concerns about entrances and exits.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A Ponte Vedra woman won half of the $650,000 jackpot from last month's Lucky Money lottery drawing, lottery officials announced Tuesday. Carolyn Morris, 70, bought her winning ticket at the GATE store on U.S. 1 near County Road 210. The other winning ticket was purchased in Zephyrhills. Morris took her prize money as a lump sum payment of $245,390, lottery officials said. The next Lucky Money drawing is scheduled for Tuesday at 11:15 p.m.
