PUTNAM COUNTY, Fla. – The Crescent City Council voted 4-1 on Wednesday night to permanently disband the police department. Back in December, the entire department was placed on administrative leave amid an investigation by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement into training records and irregularities. The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office took over jurisdiction. AdIn the report, the FDLE recommends one of the officers be fired because he didn’t complete mandatory training. The audit also revealed that training documents were never found for another officer, meaning that officer needs to be retrained.

PALATKA, Fla. – Human remains found over the weekend in a shallow grave outside Crescent City were identified as those of a missing 20-year-old Putnam County mother, authorities said Tuesday. Putnam County Sheriff’s Office Col. Joseph Wells announced at a news conference Tuesday afternoon that the medical examiner ruled Nyeisha Nelson’s death a homicide, but he did not say how she was killed. According to the Sheriff’s Office, Nelson, a self-employed hairdresser, was reported missing by her family on Wednesday after she had not been seen or heard from for several days. Nelson’s car was found Thursday abandoned in a wooded area off Old U.S. 17 not far from Crescent City. “But the exact motive is not known.”Wells said the investigation suggests that someone may have used Nelson’s car after she disappeared.

A 32-year-old woman was killed and a 7-year-old girl was critically injured Saturday morning in a crash on U.S. 17 in Crescent City, troopers said. According to a Florida Highway Patrol crash report, the woman was pulling out of a driveway onto U.S. 17 when she was hit by an oncoming pick-up truck. The 28-year-old woman driving the truck suffered serious injuries. The crash was reported 0.3 miles north of Ewers Road in Crescent City. Both women involved and the child were wearing seat belts, troopers said.

CRESCENT CITY, Fla. – A controversial proposal by the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office to take over all law enforcement operations in Crescent City comes during a time when the entire city police department has been placed on administrative leave. During Thursday night’s City Council meeting, Crescent City Mayor Michelle Myers explained to a packed room why this was an issue of great concern. Putnam County Sheriff Gator Deloach was also at that meeting, where he proposed having the Sheriff’s Office permanently take over law enforcement operations in the city. The Sheriff’s Office and jail is a 30-minute drive from Crescent City, but the plan on the table is to use the existing police office as a Sheriff’s Office sub-station, so that deputies will always be near. Proposals by the Sheriff’s Office to take over policing in Crescent City are nothing new.

CRESCENT CITY, Fla. – Two families may not have the Christmas they planned for after Putnam County deputies said they were visited by a man they described as the Grinch of Crescent City. The Sheriff’s Office said Jeremy Addison, 18, is accused of breaking into two homes and stealing Christmas toys. Gyde said her children’s Christmas gifts were taken along with money that had been saved for a family trip. Also at the time of his arrest, Addison had 17 warrants for his arrest in connection to a string of thefts and robberies in Crescent City that he’s accused of committing before he turned 18. “I pray for him a lot because he’s young.”The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office say it will make sure the children who’s presents were stolen have a merry Christmas.

CRESCENT CITY, Fla. – The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office has taken over jurisdiction from the Crescent City Police Department while the entire department is under investigation by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. As of 5 p.m. on Friday, all Crescent City Police Department activities were forced to cease. The police building was forced to close and the five officers that make up the police force were all placed on administrative leave with pay. According to a news release from the Crescent City administration office, FDLE will be investigating irregularities that pertain to police officer training and certifications. This action is being taken to assure integrity in the City’s law enforcement services and is not a disciplinary act against any CCPD personnel.

CRESCENT CITY, Fla. – A Putnam County woman died Sunday after contracting COVID-19 at a Putnam County nursing home, according to her family. A report from the state Department of Health shows, as of Monday, Lakewood Nursing Center had eight positive residents, two positive residents transferred and 14 positive staff members. According to the health department, the data is provisional and subject to change. It’s also worth noting that the information in the report comes from the facilities, as they report it to the state Agency for Health Care Administration. “All staff members who tested positive should follow the procedures directed by the Putnam County Florida Department of Health.

CRESCENT CITY, Fla. – Crescent City Commissioner Kathleen Berg, 57, was arrested Thursday after Putnam County detectives said they found she was diverting funds from a disabled man left in her care to her own account. Berg, who is also the owner of a consignment store that doubles as a salon, was entrusted with the man’s wellbeing after the victim’s mother died in 2016. According to the victim, Berg never checked on him to ensure his living conditions were acceptable. The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office said Berg depleted the victim’s personal account where his Social Security checks were being deposited. News4Jax is also awaiting a response from the city to find out what her fate is as a commissioner.

CRESCENT CITY, Fla. – A Crescent City native who was killed in a shooting Sunday in the tight-knit and normally quiet town leaves behind seven children. Family told News4Jax that Nixon and Williams were childhood friends, just one year apart in age, were well-known in the Crescent City community. Nixon, the 28-year-old father of seven, was born and raised in Crescent City. His death was the first homicide this year in Putnam County and the first homicide in eight years in Crescent City. According to Crescent City Police Chief Mark Carman, he initially got into a car after the shooting and tried to get away, but later turned himself in.

CRESCENT CITY, Fla. – Putnam County deputies confirm that a 29-year-old picked up not long after Trkey Nixon was shot to death on Sunday afternoon near the Crescent City police station was charged with murder. Williams was booked into the Putnam County jail on a first-degree murder charge just after midnight.
