With murders increasing in parts of Florida, rewards for tips resulting in homicide arrests can now reach $9,500, up from $5,000, Attorney General Ashley Moody announced Wednesday. “Florida has experienced historic crime rate lows. But unfortunately, we have seen in certain parts of our state significant increases in murders,” Moody said during a news conference at the Orlando Police Department. The 27 Crime Stopper organizations in the state have been offering rewards between $1,000 and $5,000 for anonymous tips that provide information leading to arrests. AdAccording to Moody’s office, murders in Florida went up 16% in the first six months of 2020, with some of the highest rates found in Broward, Duval and Orange counties.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – In the four weeks since Jacksonville Sheriff Mike Williams announced a revival of the gun bounty program, Crime Stoppers has received 23 tips, paid out one $1,000 reward and a second has been approved. While the program has existed for 14 years, Crime Stoppers Executive Director Wyllie Hodges said tips in the month since Williams relaunched the program there has been a 60% increase in tips. Since the gun bounty program was created, Crime Stoppers has received 3,079 tips which led to 375 arrests and 443 guns taken off the streets. About $261,000 in reward money has been paid. Callers to 866-845-TIPS can remain anonymous and could be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000.

On Thursday, Attorney General Ashley Moody and the Florida Association of Crime Stoppers (FACS) unveiled a first-of-its-kind anonymous tip line that works no matter where in the state the tipster is calling from. Now, all tipsters have to do is dial **TIPS (**8477) and they’ll be connected with the local Crime Stoppers office in the region they’re calling from. During a news conference in Tampa, Moody expressed optimism that the tip line would build on Crime Stoppers' track record of helping police solve open cases. “The network of 27 Crime Stoppers chapters serving Florida is excited about implementing this new technology,” added Frank Brunner, president of the Florida Association of Crime Stoppers and executive director for Manatee County Crime Stoppers.

Phillip Harley, 37, and Michael Thomas, 35, were gunned down in June while working overnight at a tower off Firestone Road and Morse Avenue, according to the Jacksonville Sheriffs Office. According to police on-scene, Harley and Thomas got to work around 10:00 p.m. June 17 to do repair work on the tower and install batteries. No new information has been provided at this time, though the reward through Crime Stoppers has been raised to $4,000. He was on his job and worked trying to support his family, Larry Harley said.

Alexader Brown, 20, arrested in Daytona Beach on charges of armed home invasion and grand theft in Palm CoastPALM COAST, Fla. - The Flagler County Sheriff's Office said a man they consider armed and dangerous has just been taken into custody by the Daytona Police Department. An arrest warrant was issued for Brown for home invasion robbery with a firearm and grand theft. Detectives said Brown lives in Daytona Beach and has a history of run-ins with law enforcement officers, including being taken into custody under the Baker Act. Investigators said two days later he was charged with assault on a law enforcement officer and resisting arrest after being accused of assaulting the officer during his stay in the hospital. "This is a dangerous guy who doesn't think twice about using violence to get what he wants," Sheriff Rick Staly said.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Surveillance video and expert analysis seems to indicate Wednesday night's shooting of two women in the Hillcrest neighborhood on the Westside was not random. The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office was called about 9 p.m. to Woodcrest Road, where they found two women between the ages of 20 and 30 shot. The video shows a dark car traveling down Woodcrest Road, and according to the neighbor, the two women were inside. "They're being followed by that white car right there," he said, pointing to a white, four-door car following closely behind the dark car. Seconds later, the white car sped off in the direction from which it came.
