Four months after Jacksonville Sheriff T.K. Waters unveiled his vision for the future of the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office to address hiring throughout the department and other issues, the Sheriff’s Office announced Thursday that it was awarded a $5 million grant from the Department of Justice.

The News4JAX I-TEAM has reported on twelve in-custody deaths at the jail so far this year, including three that were just in the past month and a half. State Representatives Angie Nixon and Tracie Davis are now asking the Department of Justice for a federal investigation. The DOJ responded to their request, acknowledging the letter and referring it for review.
