Former New York Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver has died while serving a prison sentence in a corruption case.

Some legislators want to change New York’s campaign finance rules after Gov. Andrew Cuomo used $285,000 in political donations to pay lawyers representing him in sexual harassment and misconduct investigations.

His conviction in federal court in Manhattan was overturned on appeal before he was convicted again in 2018. The federal prison in Otisville is about 80 miles (130 kilometers) from New York City, tucked in the lush countryside south of the Catskill Mountains.

He was released on furlough as part of an attempt to slow the spread of the virus in federal prisons. WASHINGTON President Donald Trumps longtime personal lawyer and fixer Michael Cohen will be released from federal prison Thursday and is expected to serve the remainder of his sentence at home, a person familiar with the matter told The Associated Press. Cohen has been serving a federal prison sentence at FCI Otisville in New York after pleading guilty to numerous charges, including campaign finance fraud and lying to Congress. Cohen, 53, began serving his sentence last May and was scheduled to be released from prison in November 2021. Cohen was told last month he would be released to serve the rest of his three-year sentence at home in response to concerns about coronavirus. Other high-profile inmates have also been released as the number of coronavirus cases soars in the federal prison system.
