He joined MLB in 1991 as director of minor league operations and was promoted to senior vice president of baseball operations in 2000 and executive vice president of baseball operations on June 1, 2005. He shifted to executive vice president of baseball development on June 11, 2010, and was replaced in the operations role the following February by Joe Torre.
