AdParents and former students of Douglas Anderson said they were outraged after hearing about plans for the meeting. โI think that this sadly has taken away the possibility of trusting administration to create that safe space for students,โ said Douglas Anderson alumna Jade Collins. AdNews4Jax received an email reportedly sent to school leaders two weeks ago by a group of students. For perspective, Douglas Anderson School of the Arts has more than 1,100 students.

UPDATE: Segregated meetings at Douglas Anderson canceled after โdismayโ from parents, school districtThe email that was sent to DA families with the subject line โStudent Cultural Meetingsโ was addressed from Melanie Hammer, the schoolโs principal. These meetings are to discuss cultural issues that have arisen at DA and to ensure that DA truly is a place for all. The two meetings are scheduled as follows: 9 am will be for all 11th and 12th-grade students of color, and 10:30 am will be for all 11th and 12th-grade white students. Our consultant will continue to work closely with DA students bringing everyone together for our common goal.

The announcement comes as seven new cases were also reported at Sandalwood High School on Wednesday. At Douglas Anderson High School, which moved to online learning this week after an outbreak, there were no new reported cases as of Wednesday evening, according to the district. At Providence School of Jacksonville, the โsmall amount of casesโ among high school and middle school students forced the school to move to virtual learning for the rest of the week for grades 6-12.

The start of the new school year is fast approaching and some parents are concerned about the options provided to secondary students, particularly those of magnet schools. The Duval County School Districts reopening plan provides students in grades seven through 12 two options; attend in-person classes for a few days a week or enroll in Duval Virtual Instruction Academy full-time. First of all, the elementary and the middle school students are allowed the Florida Virtual option, you know, without losing their slot.Davies told News4Jax shes not comfortable sending her son back to school under the current state of the coronavirus.
